Supporting Young Innovators: Insights from Takafumi Suzuo at Kamiyama Entrepreneur Night

Inspiring the Next Generation: Takafumi Suzuo at Kamiyama Entrepreneur Night

On July 8, 2026, Kamiyama Town in Tokushima Prefecture hosted the Entrepreneur Night event at Kamiyama Kosen, featuring Takafumi Suzuo, the CEO of Green Energy & Company. This event aims to foster innovation among the nation’s youth by inviting entrepreneurs who create new societal values.

Kamiyama Town has garnered significant attention nationwide for its efforts in community building through initiatives related to migration, alternative work styles, art, and education. Kamiyama Kosen plays a crucial role by nurturing talent that contributes to producing new values in this progressive environment.

A Career Defined by Challenges

In the first part of his lecture, Suzuo shared insights about his diverse career journey. After studying architecture at university, he joined a major construction company, where he gained foundational knowledge in home building. Driven by the desire to seize unique life experiences, he embarked on a backpacking journey around the world.
Upon returning to Tokushima, he became involved in corporate revitalization, gaining firsthand experience in turning around struggling businesses. Through these challenges, he cultivated a managerial perspective and the capability to build successful enterprises. This journey ultimately led to the founding of Green Energy & Company, where he has navigated various changes, tailored organizational structures, and continuously pursued growth as a publicly traded company.

Reflecting on his experiences, Suzuo noted that having worked as an employee, in corporate regeneration, and as an entrepreneur has enriched his understanding of the challenges and opportunities in each role.

Transforming Renewable Energy Perception

Suzuio then discussed the renewable energy initiatives undertaken by Green Energy & Company. He acknowledged that many people view renewable energy as beneficial for the environment—related to CO2 reduction and climate change mitigation—but tend to associate it primarily with government and large corporations, feeling it’s somewhat distant.

Suzuio highlighted the company’s mission: to democratize access to renewable energy, making it a tangible option for individuals and communities. He articulated a vision where “10 million individuals create their own energy,” encouraging local ownership and utility of green infrastructures such as solar farms and storage facilities. This paradigm shift views renewable energy not simply as environmental equipment but as a “green asset” with the potential for profit.

Addressing Local Challenges Through Renewable Energy

The discussion further explored how renewable energy can generate income that directly addresses local challenges. For instance, if individuals harness green assets like solar panels or batteries, the income they generate could alleviate expenses such as housing costs, thereby expanding their financial choices.
Additionally, using dormant land or underutilized assets to develop renewable energy infrastructure could fund solutions for various community issues, including disaster preparedness and education.
Suzuio emphasized that creating frameworks for economic value for individuals and communities is vital for the sustainable expansion of renewable energy.

Expanding Possibilities Towards a Green Future

Suzuio also provided an overview of the evolution of Green Energy & Company—from its initial focus on housing, transitioning to energy production, adapting to a business model independent of FIT regulations, and its rebranding, culminating in the establishment of a grid-storage business. He stressed that environmentally beneficial enterprises should not rely solely on donations or be perceived as non-profitable; they must operate sustainably and generate significant revenue, thus enhancing community well-being.
He expressed that balancing social value and profitability is essential for expanding options for individuals, businesses, and communities alike.

Engaging with Students on Entrepreneurship and Social Issues

During the Q&A session, students posed numerous inquiries. One notable question concerned the image of solar power potentially harming forests. Suzuio acknowledged the misunderstanding but clarified that solar power systems can function effectively without significant resource consumption, while poor development practices create negative perceptions.
He reassured attendees that Green Energy & Company focuses on developing small-scale green energy sites rather than deforesting vast areas.
Further inquiries about reconciling social responsibility with profitability revealed that while the company initially aimed to establish stability, there arose a realization of the limits to solely profit-driven ventures. Suzuo suggested that achieving social good while aspiring to be the best in the field defines a successful entrepreneurial vision.

As the company grows, acquiring skilled personnel becomes increasingly vital. Suzuio noted the importance of fostering a collaborative environment in local communities.

An Encouraging Message to Students

Concluding the evening, Suzuio urged students to leverage educational opportunities and embrace challenges, stating, “The world is full of opportunities. If you learn and take chances here, possibilities will surely unfold.”

The event closed with informal discussions over dinner and a campfire, where students exchanged ideas about entrepreneurship, energy, community, and social issues with Suzuio.

Green Energy & Company remains committed to supporting young innovators and fostering community development through education and sustainable practices, as we pave the way toward a greener future.
