SoCalGas and U.S.VETS Celebrate 250 Years of America by Honoring Veterans this Fourth of July
Celebration of Service: SoCalGas and U.S.VETS Unite on Independence Day
In a heartwarming display of gratitude and community spirit, Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) organized a significant Fourth of July celebration in partnership with U.S.VETS. This year marked a special occasion as the nation commemorated its 250th anniversary, making the event even more meaningful for the nearly 150 veterans and their families who attended the festivities at the U.S.VETS Inland Empire campus located on March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, California.
The collaborative effort between SoCalGas and U.S.VETS aimed not only to celebrate America’s independence but also to honor the brave men and women who have served in the military. Paul Goldstein, vice president of supply chain and support operations at SoCalGas, stressed the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by veterans, especially during such a significant national milestone. He noted, "As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, it is especially meaningful to honor the veterans who have helped protect the freedoms we celebrate this Independence Day."
As part of the celebrations, SoCalGas employees, including members of the company’s veteran employee community, volunteered their time and efforts. The event featured a festive barbeque, outdoor games such as cornhole and life-sized Connect 4, and various engaging activities tailored for families. Furthermore, the event fostered a welcoming atmosphere, reinforcing the importance of community connection among attendees.
U.S.VETS plays a vital role in supporting veterans. With over 32,000 veterans experiencing homelessness in the U.S. on any given night, the services offered by U.S.VETS and similar organizations are starkly essential. The Inland Empire campus alone houses more than 400 veterans, providing not only shelter but also a sense of community and belonging.
Nicole Starks-Murray, executive director of U.S.VETS Inland Empire, conveyed her appreciation for SoCalGas. She stated, "On behalf of myself and our entire team, we are incredibly grateful for SoCalGas and the significant impact the company has made on the lives of the veterans we serve. Their contributions help create pathways toward sustainable living and truly make a difference."
The collaboration extends beyond today's event; SoCalGas has committed to aiding U.S.VETS through charitable grants that fund critical services ranging from housing and support to workforce development programs. This initiative not only enhances the lives of veterans but also engages SoCalGas employees in meaningful community service.
SoCalGas is recognized as the largest gas distribution utility in the United States, serving more than 21 million consumers across 24,000 square miles of the state. The company’s dedication to community service has been acknowledged widely, including recognition by entities such as the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.
Events like the one held this Fourth of July serve as a vital reminder of the ongoing need to support veterans and their families. It creates a narrative of hope while fostering unity within the community and empowering veterans by allowing them to feel celebrated and appreciated for their service. Looking forward, the partnership between SoCalGas and U.S.VETS aims to further explore collaborative avenues to uplift veterans across Southern California, establishing a model for community partnerships in veteran support.
As our nation looks ahead, let us carry the spirit of July 4th into every day, recognizing those who have given so much and continue to serve, reinforcing the fact that freedom is not free, but is maintained through the sacrifice and dedication of those in uniform.
