Georgia Power’s Outstanding Commitment Recognized
April marks
Lineworker Appreciation Month, and Georgia Power is fully embracing the moment by honoring its dedicated lineworkers who faced the wrath of
Hurricane Helene in September 2024. This hurricane left a profound impact on the state, knocking down power lines and darkening homes for over a million residents. The company has recently been awarded the Emergency Recovery Award by the
Edison Electric Institute (EEI) for its exemplary efforts in swiftly restoring power following the disaster.
A Tribute to Heroes
The recognition from EEI is not merely a testament to the technical skill of Georgia Power's workforce but also to their unwavering spirit and commitment to community service. During the hurricane, which was the most destructive in Georgia Power’s 140-year history, local crews worked around the clock to restore power after the storm brought down more than
1,500 miles of power lines, damaged over
5,800 transformers, and resulted in
11,800 broken power poles. In the aftermath, a collaborative effort saw over
20,000 utility workers, including teams from other states as far away as California and New Jersey, join forces to bring back power and hope to affected communities.
Georgia: A Community United
Kim Greene, the CEO of Georgia Power, expressed immense pride in her team, stating,
“This award from EEI is a testament to their shared dedication and commitment to our neighbors and communities.” She emphasized how the response to the hurricane underscored the exceptional service that Georgia Power aims to provide. To further honor these heroes,
Georgia Lineworker Day, proclaimed by state lawmakers on March 11, was celebrated at the Georgia State Capitol, recognizing and honoring the contributions of linemen across the state.
A Call for New Talent
In light of expanding energy needs and the recovery efforts, Georgia Power is ramping up its recruitment efforts, with plans to hire approximately
180 lineworkers each year for the next several years. As Georgia continues to grow, so does the demand for more skilled professionals in the electrical utility sector. The company has been proactive in providing adequate training and educational opportunities, working closely with technical colleges across the state to ensure that aspiring lineworkers acquire the necessary skills and certifications for the job. Notably, over
60 percent of new hires come from these technical programs, which offer intensive training and certification opportunities.
Join the Electric Workforce
Georgia Power's commitment to workforce development goes beyond merely hiring skilled professionals. The company invests heavily in its employees’ growth and provides multi-year
apprenticeship programs designed to advance their skills continually. This integrated support structure includes competitive compensation packages, health, and retirement benefits, making Georgia Power a desirable workplace for future lineworkers.
In conclusion, Georgia Power not only celebrates its past achievements during disasters but is also looking forward to a bright future by instilling a culture of excellence in service and workforce development, ensuring that they remain at the forefront of delivering reliable power to its communities.
