Transforming Energy Management: The Adoption of EM CLOUD by Nippon Thomson

Introduction to the Case Study

Mudakara Co., Ltd., based in Minato-ku, Tokyo, has recently shared an insightful case study regarding the implementation of its energy management system, EM CLOUD, at Nippon Thomson Co., Ltd. This interview reveals how Nippon Thomson has benefitted from adopting EM CLOUD in 2024. The insights are provided by Mr. Hirayama, who is in charge of sustainable management promotion in the Corporate Planning Department, linking it with environmental measures within the management strategy.

Challenges Before Implementation

Before the adoption of EM CLOUD, Nippon Thomson's energy management at its headquarters was largely neglected. In comparison to their production facility in Gifu, which had obtained ISO certification, there was a noticeably lower environmental awareness at the headquarters. Although the new headquarters building, completed in 2019, did not face notable electricity usage issues due to the reduced office attendance during the COVID-19 pandemic, the realities shifted in 2022. Rising fuel costs stemming from the conflict in Ukraine and an urgent push towards decarbonization brought about the need to reconsider their electricity plan. However, estimates indicated an increase of around 2 million yen in electricity costs annually, presenting a significant challenge.

The Decision-Making Process

Ultimately, the decision to implement EM CLOUD came after comparing three different providers, with the primary deciding factor being the affordability of Mudakara's offering. The subscription-based pricing model positioned EM CLOUD as a favorable option, alleviating the maintenance burden on the company. Moreover, it aligned perfectly with Nippon Thomson’s goal to achieve energy savings without compromising employee comfort. The timing was crucial as EM CLOUD was undergoing updates, requiring adjustments to align with the company's air conditioning systems. Fortunately, the flexibility of Mudakara's team made this transition manageable.

Post-Implementation Results

Once integrated, users found the EM CLOUD interface remarkably intuitive. It provided clear visualizations of electricity usage and savings, enabling quick comparisons between the controlled and uncontrolled energy consumption in their air conditioning systems. The addition of electricity cost data facilitated immediate calculations of savings, proving to be extremely useful.

By the time EM CLOUD commenced full operation around June-July 2024, the weather conditions were significantly harsh, yet the electricity usage only increased by 2% compared to the relatively calmer previous year. This outcome felt especially significant given the rise in office occupancy post-COVID, illustrating the substantial benefits gained from EM CLOUD.
