Arts District Liberty Station Designated as a New Cultural District in California
Arts District Liberty Station, steeped in history and creativity, has recently been designated as one of California's ten new state-recognized cultural districts. This honor was given by the California Arts Council (CAC) on December 12, 2025, as part of an initiative to enhance California's rich cultural landscape. With this designation, Liberty Station joins nine other districts, highlighting the state's commitment to fostering diverse artistic identities.
The Cultural Districts program seeks to support vibrant and inclusive creative economies across the state, making it a cornerstone of California's artistic identity. Since its inception, Liberty Station has transformed 18 out of 26 historic buildings located in what used to be San Diego's Naval Training Center, creating a dynamic hub for arts and culture. Now, this sprawling 100-acre area is home to over 100 museums, galleries, studios, and nonprofits that celebrate San Diego's unique cultural fabric.
Lisa Johnson, President and CEO of Arts District Liberty Station, expressed her gratitude for the recognition. She remarked, “It is a tremendous honor to be selected for the latest cohort of California Cultural Districts... This designation recognizes Arts District Liberty Station as a cornerstone of San Diego's creative economy.” This affirmation supports the ongoing efforts to blend historical significance with contemporary creative expression, making Liberty Station a beacon for both locals and visitors alike.
With a mix of creativity and innovation, the district aims to not only preserve its historical assets but also promote a forward-thinking, inclusive environment. The designation brings along benefits including a $10,000 funding over the next two years, official state certification, technical assistance, and enhanced access to branding and marketing resources.
The time frame for this designation extends from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2030, reinforcing the importance of long-term commitment to fostering local arts and culture.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria emphasized the significance of Liberty Station’s designation, stating, “Arts District Liberty Station has become one of San Diego’s most important creative hubs, and this recognition reflects the real impact it has on our city.” His commendation highlights the vital role that artists, galleries, museums, and public art activities play in setting up a vibrant arts and entertainment environment.
The California Cultural Districts program, established in 2015 through Assembly Bill 189, offers communities a framework to promote their unique cultural strengths while stimulating local economies. The selection process for the Cultural Districts is competitive, advocating for authentic partnerships and a clear vision. The Arts District was chosen after undergoing a rigorous application and review process, which included site visits and peer panel evaluations to determine their value and viability in enriching California’s cultural landscape.
In their 25th anniversary, Arts District Liberty Station continues to celebrate through its campaign, “Creating, Connecting, Celebrating – 25 Years and Growing,” which aims to support arts education, public art initiatives, and community programming that enrich the region’s creative ecosystem. As it transforms a piece of military history into a lively cultural space, Liberty Station represents the heart of San Diego’s rich arts landscape, linking past narratives with future possibilities.
