Women Weigh In: Balancing Career and Romance Based on Income Levels

Exploring Women's Priorities: Work vs. Love

In recent research conducted by Bizki Co., which operates Kirei Style, a leading website focused on beauty and health, a survey was administered to 2,000 women across Japan to understand their lifestyle priorities in terms of work and romance. The findings reveal intriguing trends that span across different income brackets and age groups.

Survey Overview

The survey, conducted online, targeted women aged between 20 and 59 years. The respondents were asked about their views on whether work or romance is more important. Here are the options provided:
1. Work
2. Romance
3. Both are equally important
4. Cannot choose
5. Varies depending on the situation
6. Neither is important

General Findings

The results showed that a significant 32.9% of women believe that both work and romance hold equal importance in their lives. Following closely, 24.4% of respondents indicated that their priorities shift depending on the situation, while 13.6% leaned towards valuing romance more.
Interestingly, 9.7% of women stated that neither work nor romance is particularly important to them.

Age Group Insights

When analyzed by age, the preference for balancing work and love remained consistent across all age brackets. Women seem keen to maintain equilibrium between their careers and romantic relationships. However, the trend of dismissing both as unimportant was notably higher among women in their 20s and 30s.
This hints at a cultural shift where younger generations may prioritize 'oshi-katsu'—the activities surrounding fandom, such as supporting idols or engaging in anime culture—over traditional romantic pursuits.

Income Level Analysis

The survey also revealed patterns emerging from household income levels. Among those with an annual income below 5 million yen, the majority (37.2%) prioritized work. In contrast, those whose household income exceeds 10 million yen typically favored romance, suggesting that financial stability influences emotional priorities.
According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, once basic security is attained, individuals are more inclined to fulfill higher-level desires for love and belonging. This may explain why higher-income women tend to emphasize romance as an avenue for enhancing happiness.
Moreover, respondents who deemed both work and romance equally important predominantly fell within the 5 to 10 million yen income bracket, indicating a stronger emphasis on work-life balance.
