UNDP and Exponential Science Foundation Launch a Government Blockchain Academy
In an exciting development for public innovation, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Exponential Science Foundation have announced a strategic partnership to create a Government Blockchain Academy. This initiative is specifically designed to advance innovations within the public sector, leveraging emerging technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence.
The newly established Academy aims to provide specialized training and implementation programs that empower governments to tackle significant developmental challenges. With the intention of bridging the gap between education and execution, the Academy focuses on five key pillars:
1.
Inclusive Digital Finance: This pillar emphasizes promoting access to financial services through secure, digital payment systems, ensuring that underserved populations have financial opportunities.
2.
Transparent Governance: By utilizing blockchain technology, the Academy seeks to enhance integrity and combat corruption through secure, tamper-proof records and digital transactions, thereby increasing trust in governmental processes.
3.
Supply Chain Integrity: The Academy aims to improve accountability and traceability in public procurement and logistics, utilizing decentralized verification methods to foster transparency and reliability in supply chains.
4.
Climate Resilience: Through the application of blockchain-based smart contracts and digital tokens, the Academy will facilitate transparent climate financing, including the tracking of carbon credits, driving sustainability in governmental practices.
5.
Digital Identity Solutions: The provision of reliable, verifiable digital credentials will help streamline access to services, ensuring that citizens can interact with governmental bodies with confidence and security.
The launch of the Government Blockchain Academy's initial country programs is expected in 2026, following preparatory activities, curriculum development, and stakeholder engagement throughout 2025. The official announcement is slated to occur during TOKEN2049, taking place in Singapore on October 1-2, 2025. As part of this launch, a roundtable discussion will bring together protocol developers and infrastructure providers, fostering collaboration and support for this global educational initiative.
Irena Cerovic, Team Leader for Innovation at UNDP Europe and Central Asia, stated, “At UNDP, we are committed to institutional innovation, creating spaces for governments to explore and test cutting-edge technologies. The Government Blockchain Academy builds on this spirit, offering a pathway for countries to address complex development challenges in novel ways, transitioning from testing to implementation while reinforcing transparency, inclusion, and resilience.”
Prof. Paolo Tasca, Executive Chair of Exponential Science, added, “This is not merely an educational initiative; it represents a collective blueprint for public innovation. By bringing together various partners within a structured framework, we can ensure that authorities have the tools and talent necessary to navigate the next wave of digital transformation.”
The Government Blockchain Academy plans to offer in-person workshops, online modules, and leadership forums tailored to the needs of the public sector and local governments. Participants from government backgrounds will gain access to selected resources along with customized support, expert advice, and guidance throughout the digital learning program.
Each government team will receive structured assistance, ranging from identifying use cases to meeting development requirements, and collaboration with industry experts. This will culminate in co-design workshops where decision-makers and technical stakeholders come together to strategize scalable, impactful blockchain initiatives aligned with national priorities.
Ultimately, the Government Blockchain Academy is set to function as a global hub, serving as a venue for dialogue, experimentation, and learning. Here, officials can delve into cutting-edge technologies and shape policies that reflect digital inclusion, security, and sovereignty.
