Remembering Peter D. Hutcheon: A Pillar of the Legal Community
On January 4, 2025, the legal profession lost a remarkable figure, Peter D. Hutcheon, a long-time counsel at Norris McLaughlin, P.A. His death has left profound sadness among colleagues, clients, and friends. With over five decades in law, Hutcheon's influence extended far beyond the walls of his firm, touching various bar associations and contributing significantly to New Jersey's business law landscape.
Hutcheon began his journey with Norris McLaughlin, P.A., where he played several pivotal roles, including as the General Counsel. His expertise in corporate governance, commercial transactions, and banking law established him as a leader in the field. David C. Roberts, current Chair of the firm, expressed deep sorrow at the loss, noting that Hutcheon will be greatly missed for his wisdom, mentorship, and dedication.
He was a steadfast member known for his role in the American Bar Association, particularly within the Business Law sector. For 16 years, he edited the PUBOGRAM newsletter, contributing insights that shaped discussions in the legal community. Hutcheon was not only a Founding Fellow of the American College of LLC and Partnership Attorneys, but also a recipient of the prestigious Martin I. Lubaroff Award in 2005, which celebrates commitment to the profession.
His service did not stop at the bar associations; it extended to various state committees where his insights helped shape legislation. Hutcheon chaired the New Jersey Corporate Business Law Study Commission and was a member of the New Jersey Securities Advisory Committee, advising on essential securities-related matters.
Hutcheon's academic accomplishments are impressive, holding degrees from Williams College and Harvard Law School, the latter earning him recognition with the AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review Rating. His legal writing has been influential, with numerous published articles tackling significant business law issues. He was consistently named in "The Best Lawyers in America®" and recognized as a New Jersey Super Lawyer since its inception in 2005.
To honor his memory and contributions, a funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Clayton, New Jersey, on January 13, 2025. His legacy of legal excellence and commitment to service will remain a guiding light for future generations of attorneys.
