Florida A&M University Celebrates Over 700 Graduates in Fall 2024 Commencement Ceremonies
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) recently hosted its Fall 2024 Commencement ceremonies on December 13 and 14, recognizing the academic achievements of more than 700 graduates. The celebrations filled the venue with a sense of accomplishment and hopeful aspirations for the future.
The graduation festivities began with a profound opening statement from FAMU's Interim President, Dr. Timothy L. Beard. He inspired the graduates by reminding them of the invaluable lessons learned throughout their academic journey and the significant relationships formed along the way.
"As you prepare to leave the Highest of Seven Hills, carry with you the lessons you've learned, the friendships you've built, and the mentors who have guided you," Dr. Beard stated.
Two distinguished speakers graced the ceremonies, each providing uplifting messages to the graduates. Actress and author Malinda Williams highlighted the importance of empathy, adaptability, and the courage to act decisively. Speaking directly to the graduates, she said, "Today, you are not just graduating from an institution of higher learning; you are stepping into a world that awaits the delivery of your unique gifts and the demonstration of your immense power."
Her speech emphasized the legacy carried by FAMU graduates, entreating them to recognize their role in shaping the future. She conveyed life lessons of self-acceptance and individuality, urging students to bring their unique perspectives to every opportunity they encounter.
Similarly, Marc H. Morial, the president and CEO of the National Urban League, addressed the graduates during the second ceremony. His remarks centered on the historical significance of FAMU and the importance of the achievements realized by previous generations.
"You stand on the shoulders of giants," Morial said, invoking the names of Thomas Gibbs and Thomas Tucker—key figures in the university's history—underscoring the institution’s resilience since its inception.
Morial provided the graduates with three essential words to take with them: Achievement, Aptitude, and Attitude. He reassured them of their readiness to lead, instilling confidence in their ability to achieve greatness in all their endeavors.
Among the excited graduates was Celeste, daughter of the Board of Trustees Chair, Kristin Harper. “The past few years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, taught us invaluable lessons about resilience and adaptability. I’m grateful for the friendships I made during this time,” she reflected.
Another notable graduate, Olumide Arigbede, shared his unique journey from Nigeria to FAMU, where he pursued a Doctorate in Public Health. Inspired by FAMU's esteemed reputation, his passion for understanding public health crises led him to this prestigious institution. “FAMU has provided me with the foundation to make a difference, and I am eager to contribute as a health scientist with the FDA,” he expressed.
With over 100 degree programs offered, FAMU continues to be a beacon of education and empowerment, recently ranked 81st among the Top Public Universities by U.S. News & World Report. The university’s motto, “Excellence with Caring,” resonates deeply within the community, fostering an environment that nurtures leadership and innovation.
Graduates left the ceremonies not just with diplomas but with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to making an impact in their chosen fields, carrying on the legacy of FAMU into the future.
