UNIDO Unveils Winners of the First One World Sustainability Awards in Riyadh

A Night of Recognition: Celebrating Sustainability Innovators in Riyadh

In an inspiring ceremony held at the 21st session of the UNIDO General Conference (GC21) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the ONE World Sustainability Awards were announced. These awards aim to honor those who are making significant strides toward sustainable and inclusive industrial development globally. As the world increasingly recognizes the importance of eco-friendly practices, these awards celebrate those pushing the boundaries of sustainability.

During the opening speech, UNIDO Director-General emphasized the urgency of adopting sustainability as a standard rather than an option. He remarked, "This is the start of a movement where sustainability is paramount. The winners represent a blend of innovation, responsibility, and success." Their efforts illuminate the path toward a future filled with opportunities that are equitable and sustainable for all.

The awards were presented at the Global Industry Summit 2025, covering four key categories: Innovative Startups, Sustainable Supply Chains, Women in Industry, and Lifetime Achievement. This event was pivotal, showcasing the essential role that innovation plays in addressing global challenges.

Among the winners, Nature Bio Foods, represented by Amit Singh, was honored for its exemplary work in sustainable supply chains. This India-based company collaborates with over 96,000 small farmers across India, Africa, and Europe to pioneer climate-resilient, carbon-neutral farming models. Their commitment not only alleviates poverty but also fosters environmental stewardship.

In the category of Women in Industry, Norah Magero, CEO of Drop Access Limited in Kenya, was recognized for her innovative initiatives that promote solar-powered cold chain solutions. These efforts support vaccine distribution and food systems in Africa, highlighting how technology can empower communities.

The award for Innovative Startups went to WeLight Africa, led by Romain De Villeneuve. The startup accelerates rural electrification using sustainable mini-grid solutions across Madagascar, Mali, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their endeavors play a crucial role in driving economic growth and improving quality of life in underserved areas.

Lastly, Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland from Norway received the Lifetime Achievement Award. As the country’s first female Prime Minister and former Director-General of the WHO, she has significantly influenced global health and sustainability policies.

Echoing the sentiments of all awardees, Norah Magero shared, "The significance of UNIDO's presence here in Riyadh drives us to advance our cold chain innovations and amplify our impact on communities needing this support the most."

The ONE World Sustainability Awards represents a beacon of hope, reinforcing the message that profitability and positive societal impact can coexist. In a rapidly changing world, it becomes increasingly essential for businesses and innovators to prioritize sustainability, not just for competitive advantage, but for the well-being of future generations. Collectively, these winners are setting standards for excellence in sustainability and showcasing how responsible business practices lead to a better world for everyone.
