California Food Banks: A New Chapter in Fighting Hunger in the State

California Food Banks: Rebranding for a Unified Mission

The California Association of Food Banks has taken a significant step in its mission to combat hunger by officially changing its name to California Food Banks™. After three decades of dedicated service, this transition emphasizes collaboration and a unified effort across the state to ensure that every Californian has access to the food they need for a healthy life.

Founded three decades ago, California Food Banks™ originated with a vision of uniting food banks across the state in a collective mission to eradicate hunger. Mark Lowry, co-founder of the organization and director of the OC Food Bank at the Community Action Partnership of Orange County, stated, "Decades of collaborative efforts have resulted in access to millions of pounds of fresh produce cultivated right here in California. This brings us closer to our goal of ending hunger in our communities."

The network of food banks, community organizations, and agricultural partners under California Food Banks™ serves as the backbone of the state’s hunger relief system. They work tirelessly to transport millions of pounds of fresh produce directly from farms to families in need. Additionally, they assist eligible Californians in accessing CalFresh benefits, conduct research that informs solutions to food insecurity, and advocate for policies at both state and federal levels to strengthen the social safety net and address the root causes of hunger.

Blake Young, president/CEO of Sacramento Food Bank Family Services, remarked, "For decades, the leadership, research, programs, and advocacy of California Food Banks™ have reinforced food banks throughout the state and expanded our capacity to serve our neighbors. This name change reflects what has always been true: We are a statewide community of food banks united by a common mission - ensuring everyone in California has access to the nutrition they need to thrive."

The mission of California Food Banks™ will continue until every Californian has the necessary food resources to help their families prosper. With the same spirit and a fresh identity, they are more committed than ever to end hunger.
