MOL's Technology Lab Renovation
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), led by President Takeshi Hashimoto, is embarking on an extensive renovation of its technology lab located in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The aim is to create a futuristic research hub that emphasizes sustainability and employee well-being. The renovation initiative is founded on two key pillars: environmental consideration and the establishment of a comfortable workplace.
Carbon-Free Working Environment with Zero-Emission Conference Room
A significant component of the renovation is the introduction of a new Zero-Emission Conference Room. This innovative space uses solar power for electricity generation and storage, thereby achieving complete carbon neutrality. In the coming years, MOL plans to enhance the capacity of solar panels and storage batteries to ensure a reliable energy supply during emergencies such as natural disasters. The design of the conference room draws inspiration from the depths of the ocean, with lighting fixtures mimicking the rippling waves seen when looking up from underwater. The central table is equipped with a whiteboard surface, allowing for quick and easy discussions among team members.
Meetings in the Zero-Emission Conference Room
The focus on a more comfortable, safe, and efficient workplace extends beyond the conference room. The newly designed environment encourages communication, boosts concentration, and provides relaxation through an enhanced auditory atmosphere. The entrance of the lab showcases a design that reflects the movements of wind and sea, featuring curved cutouts that allow glimpses of greenery, thereby promoting harmony with nature. To improve security, MOL has replaced traditional intercom systems with a tablet-based reception system. Visitors receive notifications via chat upon arrival, resulting in streamlined reception processes and smoother guest interactions.
New Conference Rooms Inspired by the Oceans
As part of the renovation, five new conference rooms have been established, each named after one of the world's major oceans: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic Oceans. The ocean-themed interiors, dominated by shades of blue, aim to stimulate the creativity of the researchers utilizing these spaces.
A Stairway Reflecting Company Values
A unique feature of this renovation is the staircase adorned with the acronym “MOL CHARTS,” representing five core values that define the overarching ethos of the MOL group. This design enables employees to feel the collective drive towards a unified future, even if not present at headquarters.
This renovation aligns with “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” which emphasizes the implementation of clean energy solutions. It marks a pivotal step towards creating a sustainable, adaptable research environment that integrates environmental awareness, workplace well-being, and advanced technology. The technology lab will continue to serve as a vital venue where cutting-edge technologies and talented individuals converge to shape the future.
As a comprehensive shipping enterprise engaged across various industries, MOL Group is committed to implementing sustainable and strategic initiatives tailored to meet societal demands and customer needs.
