Obesity Care Week 2025 Inspires Global Commitment to Better Care for Individuals Affected by Obesity

Obesity Care Week 2025: A Call to Action

Obesity Care Week (OCW) is set to launch its annual global campaign in 2025 with the powerful theme of "Commit to Care." This initiative is dedicated to raising awareness, educating the public, and advocating for a more compassionate approach towards individuals affected by obesity. The campaign highlights the urgent need for accessible healthcare resources, which is critical in addressing this complex disease that impacts millions.

According to reports, over 42% of adults and 19% of youth in the United States are affected by obesity, yet the stigma surrounding this condition often leads to inadequate treatment. Alarmingly, approximately half of those diagnosed with obesity have never discussed their weight with healthcare professionals, creating a major gap in potential interventions. Additionally, only about four in ten patients reported receiving weight counseling—indicating a pressing need for improved dialogues around obesity in medical settings.

During the week of OCW, participants will be provided with daily educational materials, advocacy resources, and insights from experts in the field of obesity care. A significant component of this campaign is the “Commit to Care” Pledge, available at ObesityCareWeek.org. This pledge encourages individuals and organizations to promote awareness, advocacy, and respect, vital for supporting those affected by obesity.

Furthermore, advocates will be called to action to stand behind the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed rule to expand access to FDA-approved obesity treatments under Medicare Part D. This is a crucial step towards improving healthcare outcomes for countless individuals, emphasizing that obesity should be treated with the same seriousness as any other chronic health condition.

Joseph Nadglowski, President and CEO of the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), expressed that OCW presents a remarkable opportunity to shift societal perceptions toward obesity and the care of those affected. He stated, "It's time for everyone to recognize obesity as a complex, chronic disease that merits treatment like any other health condition."

The week is not only backed by the OAC but also garners support from numerous organizations, including the STOP Obesity Alliance, The Obesity Society (TOS), American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA). With over 160 Champion organizations lending support, the campaign is further bolstered by sponsorship from industry leaders such as Eli Lilly and Company (Diamond), Novo Nordisk (Silver), and other significant players in the healthcare sector.

With the commitment to provide better care for individuals living with obesity, OCW invites everyone to sign the pledge and advocate for change. The time for action is now—join the movement at ObesityCareWeek.org and become part of a collective effort to make a difference.
