KBP Brands Expands SONIC's Reach with Significant Acquisition of 78 Restaurants Across Several States

KBP Brands Expands SONIC's Restaurant Footprint

KBP Brands, a prominent name in the franchise business, has made headlines by expanding its SONIC restaurant chain across the United States. The company announced the acquisition of 78 drive-in locations, bringing their total to 164 within an impressive eight states. The newly acquired locations are spread across Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, marking a significant growth phase for KBP Brands.

This acquisition is noteworthy not just for its scale but also because it reflects KBP's strategic commitment to fortifying its position within the SONIC franchise. In less than two years, this marks KBP’s second purchase of SONIC, positioning it as the fourth-largest franchisee in the SONIC system. The prior locations were directly managed by SONIC, which is now part of the Inspire Brands portfolio, further emphasizing the collaborative nature of this expansion that began with KBP’s addition of Arby’s in its portfolio back in 2021.

Mike Kulp, the CEO of KBP Brands, spoke about the fruitful partnership with Inspire Brands, citing a five-year collaboration that has yielded robust results. He emphasized the eagerness of KBP to grow further, enhancing their operational efficiency and expanding their footprint in the fast-food market. Kulp praised the company’s substantial growth, attributing it to the adept integration of new brands and locations, coupled with strong franchisor relationships and data-driven operational management.

John Kelly, the Brand President of SONIC, echoed Kulp’s positive sentiments, highlighting KBP's operational excellence and their shared dedication to guest satisfaction and an innovative culture. He views the expansion as a clear demonstration of KBP’s commitment to the vision of SONIC and its sustained growth in the long term.

SONIC has long been known for its unique offerings, including innovative beverages, the iconic Smasher burgers, and delightful desserts, contributing to a customer experience that fosters loyalty and franchisor growth. Since its integration into KBP’s selection of restaurants in August 2024, SONIC has distinguished itself as a favorite among food enthusiasts.

The latest acquisition translates to an addition of approximately 1,600 employees to the KBP workforce, reflecting the company’s commitment to providing ample employment opportunities within its expanding network. Mark Everett, the Executive Vice President of KBP, is set to continue managing the company’s drive-in segment along with the Chief Operating Officer, Matt Hansen, ensuring cohesion and effective growth in their operations.

KBP Brands, recognized as one of the largest franchise entities in the United States, boasts ownership and operation of over 1,100 KFC, Taco Bell, Arby’s, and SONIC outlets across 32 states. Their impressive track record of sustained growth over the past 25 years can be attributed to their successful management of multi-unit businesses.
