Tokyo's Minato Ward Launches Metaverse Space for Hikikomori Support

Tokyo's Groundbreaking Metaverse Initiative for Hikikomori

In a revolutionary step toward mental health support, Minato Ward in Tokyo has established a specialized space within the metaverse designed for individuals experiencing hikikomori, or severe social withdrawal. This new metaverse environment, dubbed 'Hikikomori Support Space,' is set to open in August 2025 and exemplifies how digital technology can be harnessed to foster social connections and alleviate profound feelings of isolation.

At the heart of this initiative is Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP), which is leveraging its pioneering XR Communication services to support the development and operation of Minato Ward’s metaverse facility. The service aims to create a comforting digital landscape that encourages interaction while reducing the psychological barriers that hinder social participation.

Bridging the Gap to Social Interaction

Hikikomori often face significant psychological obstacles when it comes to engaging in face-to-face communication. Traditional methods of support may not adequately address their unique challenges, leading to the emergence of innovative solutions like the metaverse. An avatar-based environment allows users to explore social interactions from the safety and comfort of their homes, thus reducing the stress associated with direct contact.

DNP’s 'Metaverse Government' platform will feature functionalities specially tailored for hikikomori individuals, including text and voice chat options to facilitate diverse interaction methods. Additionally, security features are paramount, ensuring that all users can engage comfortably and safely.

Designed for Relaxation and Engagement

The metaverse space is designed with an emphasis on natural aesthetics and seasonal variations, providing a relaxing atmosphere that mirrors the real world. Users can enjoy a scenic view reminiscent of various seasons—cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant fall leaves, and serene winter snow—creating an immersive experience that promotes relaxation.

Moreover, the exclusive environment offers a selection of diverse avatars—20 options categorized by gender—aiding users in expressing their identities freely. This addition ensures that everyone feels catered to, enhancing their willingness to engage with others.

Functionality That Promotes Safety and Comfort

User safety is further prioritized through features designed to prevent aggressive behavior and facilitate emotional expression. An innovation known as the “Emotion Function” visually represents users’ feelings, creating an environment conducive to empathetic interactions. This holistic approach ensures that participants can express themselves authentically while connecting with others, thus alleviating feelings of loneliness.

A Collaborative Effort with Minato Ward

The collaboration with Minato Ward began in March 2025, marking the beginning of a new chapter in community service. By utilizing DNP's advanced metaverse technology, this partnership addresses pressing social issues, offering a supportive platform for those who wish to engage but might feel hesitant to do so in real life. Monthly events aim to facilitate casual connections, allowing participants to interact without the pressure of physical presence. Users can navigate freely in this virtual space, choosing when and how to engage—whether they want to remain anonymous or use a nickname.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Public Services in the Metaverse

DNP remains committed to broadening the scope of its metaverse applications, further integrating public services within this innovative digital realm. Future plans include virtualizing administrative services, such as electronic applications and community interaction platforms, reducing barriers for citizens in accessing essential services.

With prices starting from 500,000 yen for initial set-up and a monthly fee of 625,000 yen, DNP’s licensing reflects a standard for governmental engagement in the metaverse. Such pricing will vary depending on local governmental needs.

The creating of this unique metaverse space aims to engage those who frequently feel marginalized in society, providing a lifeline to those grappling with feelings of isolation. DNP is determined to contribute to creating a more inclusive digital society where no one is left behind—one virtual connection at a time.
