DDOT and it's electric Launch Innovative EV Charging Pilot Program

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has taken a significant step towards enhancing electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure by unveiling the Neighborhood Curbside Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station Pilot. This initiative aims to reshape local regulations and provide clear guidelines for private vendors interested in installing and maintaining EV charging stations within the public right-of-way. Developed in collaboration with the EV charging company it's electric, this pilot project has been made possible with financial backing from a federal grant.

The pilot program is set to deploy sixteen curbside chargers, each designed to service two adjacent parking spaces across eight strategic locations throughout the District. Each Ward will host one charging station, with the inaugural station now operational in Ward 1, conveniently located next to The Festival Center at 1640 Columbia Rd NW on Mozart Pl NW. Locations have been meticulously chosen to ensure safety and accessibility while ensuring compatibility with the varied uses of public streets. Additional installations are planned for the upcoming months, further expanding access to EV charging.

According to DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum, this initiative is a crucial step in the district’s pursuit of carbon neutrality by 2045. The pilot is not only a demonstration of urban electrification but also a pathway for other cities to glean insights from DC's experiences with curbside EV charging deployments. Kershbaum emphasizes the importance of making sustainable transportation options readily available to the public.

Judy Chang, Project Director for it's electric, expressed enthusiasm regarding the program’s potential. She highlighted that the chargers represent a meaningful advancement in transportation electrification within Washington, DC, solidifying DDOT’s role as a progressive agency that embraces partnership-driven pilot projects. From providing EV charging solutions to innovative bike battery swapping systems, DDOT is dedicated to developing transportation infrastructure that supports livability and sustainability in urban settings.

Bill Mefford, Executive Director at The Festival Center, articulated excitement about the partnership. He noted that The Festival Center serves as a vital hub for mission-driven groups and emphasized the significance of making convenient charging options available within the neighborhood. Mefford views this initiative as an opportunity to reinforce their commitment to community engagement while benefiting from a business model that allows property owners like themselves to share in the operational revenue generated, thus funding further community initiatives.

The launch features Level-2 chargers, which will require users to provide their own charging cables. To support residents, the it's electric app includes a feature for requesting complimentary cables, with delivery assured within 1-3 business days. Through collaboration with Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs), the best locations for the charging stations were identified, ensuring community input and awareness throughout the process.

This pilot program is more than just a step toward expanding publicly accessible EV charging stations; it is an ongoing effort to encourage the adoption of zero-emission vehicles. As the program evolves, updates about its progress can be tracked on the official DDOT sustainability website.
