Sinopec Launches WE17 Global Sustainability Brand Amid African Development Initiatives

Sinopec's Commitment to Sustainable Development in Africa

On October 25, 2026, Sinopec (China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation), a significant player in the global energy sector, launched its Africa Sustainability Report (2021-2025) in Cairo, Egypt. This event marked a significant milestone, showcasing the company’s efforts over the past five years in energy cooperation, environmental protection, community development, and cultural exchange across the African continent. Alongside this report, Sinopec unveiled its global sustainability communication brand, WE17, which emphasizes its commitment to fostering sustainable practices and local community engagement.

Highlights of the Africa Sustainability Report

The Africa Sustainability Report revealed that Sinopec has implemented 33 projects across 16 African nations, with cumulative investments exceeding $5.7 billion. Furthermore, the company has contributed over $4 billion in social responsibility initiatives during the same timeframe, creating around 16,000 local jobs through its projects by 2025. This robust contribution highlights Sinopec's dedication to not only maximizing its economic footprint but also supporting the communities in which it operates.

During the launch, Zhao Liuqing, the Minister Counselor for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, noted that 2026 celebrates the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Egypt. Zhao emphasized the strategic partnership between Sinopec and Egypt as a prime model for enhancing bilateral ties and mutual growth.

Environmentally Friendly Initiatives

The report documents Sinopec’s commitment to environmental sustainability through various initiatives. The company has focused on enhancing energy cooperation and environmental protection through oil and gas exploration, engineering services, refinery operations, and renewable energy projects. Notably, in partnership with the Apache Corporation, Sinopec is examining wind and solar energy as alternatives for oilfield operations in Egypt's western desert. Their joint efforts have led to a projected 60% reduction in gas flaring by the end of 2025, primarily through energy efficiency and gas recovery measures.

Additionally, Sinopec participates in five offshore exploration blocks in Angola and maintains a long-term energy collaboration with Algeria. Their renewable energy projects include an Adama wind power initiative in Ethiopia, which meets about 20% of the capital's power demand, and a geothermal pipeline project aimed at clean electricity generation in Kenya. As part of their environmental initiatives, Sinopec has planted over 7,000 mangroves in Angola and employed highly quiet drilling rigs in Uganda, reducing CO₂ emissions by over 90% compared to conventional drilling operations.

Investing in Communities and Cultural Development

Sinopec’s community programs focus on employment, vocational training, education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. For example, a welding training program in Uganda has enabled 60 local workers to earn internationally recognized certifications. The company has also participated in the construction of over 70 water supply facilities and the installation of more than 4,300 kilometers of pipeline across Africa. In Egypt specifically, Sinopec’s educational initiatives have supported the establishment of 201 girls' schools, providing educational opportunities for over 15,000 female students.

Moreover, Sinopec has initiated cultural exchange programs such as the “Silk Road Book House” project in Egypt, Algeria, and Cameroon, promoting intercultural dialogue and understanding among youth.

WE17: A New Chapter in Global Communication

During the launch event, Sinopec unveiled its WE17 brand under the slogan “Together for Better”. The brand aligns with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on three key themes: Clean (environmental responsibility), Care (community welfare), and Culture (intercultural exchange). This strategic initiative serves to enhance Sinopec’s global communication efforts while reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

Around 100 attendees from government, industry, academia, and media gathered for this notable event, which not only showcased Sinopec’s sustainability achievements but also underscored the company’s role in fostering development and collaboration across Africa.

By utilizing their resources and capabilities, Sinopec aims to contribute positively to the industrialization of Africa and the enhancement of public services, further integrating their operations within the socio-economic fabric of the regions they serve.
