Europe's Geothermal Revolution: Harnessing Heat for Industrial Efficiency and Emission Reduction

Unlocking Europe’s Geothermal Potential

A new analysis by Project InnerSpace, in collaboration with Future Cleantech Architects, delves into the geothermal potential across the European Union. The report, titled "Unlocking Europe's Geothermal Industrial Heat Potential," uncovers 30 significant industrial clusters in 11 EU member states that stand out as prime candidates for transitioning to geothermal heat. This shift could lead to monumental savings and environmental benefits.

The Economic Impact

According to the report, implementing geothermal heat systems in these clusters could displace over €850 million in annual fuel costs across the continent. Additionally, transitioning to geothermal energy is projected to eliminate approximately 4.3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. To put that into perspective, this correlates with the emissions resulting from more than 9 million barrels of oil. Such substantial numbers highlight geothermal heat as a critical strategy for both financial savings and climate goals.

A Wider Vision for Geothermal Utilization

The analysis identifies not just the 30 priority clusters but also includes a broader pool of 152 candidate clusters throughout Europe. Every EU member country holds the potential for utilizing geothermal heat, a resource that is often overlooked in discussions about energy transformation. Presently, natural gas accounts for about 50% of industrial heating within the EU, with approximately 90% of the gas being imported. This dependency underscores the necessity of developing domestic geothermal sources.

Beneath the EU lies an astonishing geothermal resource estimated at around 18,000 gigawatts-thermal, sufficient for various industrial processes like cooking, dehydration, and sterilization. By tapping into these subsurface assets, Europe can foster a more resilient energy framework while diminishing reliance on imported fuels, which are subject to volatile pricing—exemplified by the gas price surges of 2022, which greatly impacted energy-intensive industries in countries like Germany.

Perspectives from Industry Experts

Drew Nelson, Vice President of Strategy at Project InnerSpace, emphasizes the profound impact of embracing geothermal heat applications in the industrial sector. "Geothermal is often thought of as electricity, but its industrial heat applications are a major opportunity hiding in plain sight," he states. Ensuring access to reliable and domestic heat sources can significantly enhance Europe's energy security while bolstering industrial competitiveness amidst fluctuating energy costs.

Recommended Policy Interventions

The report outlines essential policy measures to facilitate geothermal industrial heat implementation:
1. Establish Initial Projects: Prioritizing and organizing the first geothermal heat initiatives.
2. Strengthen Industrial Geothermal Focus: Elevating geothermal to a critical industry priority.
3. Cluster-Based Demand: Encouraging collaboration amongst industries in geothermal resource areas.
4. Credible Operators: Appointing qualified managers for each geothermal cluster.
5. Investment Solutions: Reducing early-stage risks to unlock financial backing and set pathways for innovative geothermal technologies.
6. Streamlined Processes: Enhancing permitting processes and securing geothermal rights, as well as improving subsurface data to minimize seismic risks.

Dr. Marlène Siméon, Director of Policy at Future Cleantech Architects, advocates for governmental support to expand next-generation geothermal systems during their nascent commercialization phase. Learning from past successes with solar and wind technologies, targeted policies can significantly bridge gaps from inspiration to practical application.

Future Roadmap

As the European Union prepares to unveil its Geothermal Strategy and Action Plan, the report's findings offer a crucial starting point for policymakers to identify priority clusters for geothermal development. The 30 clusters identified not only provide a practical roadmap for governments but also play a vital role in shaping national energy and climate strategies.

A webinar discussing these findings, featuring input from notable figures including Andris Piebalgs, former EU Commissioner for Energy, aims to engage stakeholders in this pivotal conversation. The full report is accessible at Project InnerSpace’s website.
