LONGi's Solar Innovations Stand Out at the World Economic Forum 2025
The World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting, often referred to as the Davos Conference, commenced on January 20, 2025, in the picturesque town of Davos, Switzerland. This year's gathering, themed "Collaboration for the Intelligent Age," has drawn nearly 3,000 global leaders from over 130 nations to collaborate on pressing global issues. Among the distinguished attendees, Zhong Baoshen, Chairman of LONGi, and Eric Luo, Vice President of LONGi, represented China's solar photovoltaic sector, presenting key advancements and future directions of solar energy to an audience comprised of influential policymakers and business leaders.
On January 21st, during a session titled "Solar Beating All Expectations," Zhong Baoshen delivered a compelling speech emphasizing the rapid progress of the photovoltaic industry and its crucial contribution to global climate objectives. He noted that while it took 68 years from the first achievements to surpass 1 terawatt of installed solar capacity in 2022, the second terawatt milestone was reached in an astonishing two years. The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that by 2030, the global installed capacity for solar PV could exceed 4,000 gigawatts, with Zhong expressing confidence that it may surpass 5,000 gigawatts given the current momentum.
The dramatic decline in the cost of solar PV systems is also noteworthy—having dropped to about 1/820 of the cost in 1975. During the session, Eric Luo highlighted notable achievements of LONGi, including setting new efficiency records in 2024 with 27.30% efficiency for monocrystalline silicon solar cells and 34.6% for tandem solar cells that combine crystalline silicon with perovskite technology. This focus on technological innovation is integral to LONGi’s strategy, which has helped decrease the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), thereby driving the global shift toward net-zero emissions.
Zhong Baoshen underscored the anticipated exponential growth of solar PV installed capacity, predicting several-fold increases over just a few years. He asserted that solar PV has become an unstoppable force in the energy landscape, fundamentally transforming global energy dynamics.
In addition to technological advances, LONGi is also leading innovations in intelligent manufacturing. At the 2024 Davos Conference, the company’s Jiaxing Base was recognized as the only "Lighthouse Factory" in the photovoltaic industry. Eric Luo introduced the integration of advanced technologies such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), big data, artificial intelligence, and digital twins implemented at the Lighthouse Factory, which exemplifies the photovoltaic sector’s transition from traditional manufacturing to more intelligent manufacturing processes.
The energy sector faced an "Energy Trilemma" a decade ago, a scenario where simultaneous achievement of environmental protection, economic viability, and energy security seemed unattainable. However, innovative strides—particularly within solar PV technology—over the years have reshaped this narrative. Today, solar PV stands as a dependable, affordable, and sustainable energy source, meeting the increasing global energy demand while simultaneously providing avenues for the uptake of emerging green technologies like energy storage, green hydrogen, and more, thereby significantly contributing to global decarbonization efforts.
Luo also shared insights on the future integration of solar energy with various technologies such as energy storage systems, architecture, and smart grids. Innovations like Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) showcase how solar energy can not only fulfill the energy requirements of structures but also allow surplus energy to be fed back into the grid, enhancing energy efficiency.
The collaborative efforts within the global solar industry have instigated a transformation across application scenarios, technological developments, and cost efficiencies, along with a shift towards intelligent manufacturing practices. Zhong Baoshen concluded with an optimistic forecast stating that the future of solar energy would exceed expectations while propelling a harmonious balance between economic progress and environmental sustainability.
