Celebrating National Homeownership Month: Florida Realtors Promote the Value of Homeownership

National Homeownership Month: A Celebration of Homeownership

June is recognized as National Homeownership Month across the United States, and Florida Realtors® are at the forefront of this celebration. This significant month acknowledges not only the importance of homeownership but also the profound impact it has on American families, local communities, and the nation’s overall economy. As we commemorate the 24th anniversary of this initiative this year, the emphasis is on the vital role that real estate professionals play in helping individuals and families achieve their dreams of owning a home.

According to Chuck Bonfiglio Jr., the 2026 President of Florida Realtors and a broker-owner of AAA Realty Group in Plantation, “Homeownership is one of the most meaningful investments a person or family can make—not just financially, but for stability, opportunities, and building a future.” For countless Floridians, a home represents years of hard work and independence, providing a pathway toward long-term wealth that can be passed down to future generations.

Recent statistics underscore the vital economic benefits of homeownership. The average net worth of a homeowner in the U.S. is estimated to be around $430,000, compared to a mere $10,000 for the typical renter, as per the latest data from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finance. These figures clearly illustrate how owning a home can be a powerful vehicle for wealth accumulation.

In the first quarter of 2026, Florida's homeownership rate stood at 66.3%, slightly above the national average of 65.3%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. These numbers reflect a steady commitment to homeownership that resonates strongly in the Sunshine State, where Realtors are dedicated to guiding buyers and sellers through one of the most significant decisions in their lives.

The initiative to celebrate homeownership started in 1995 as a week-long acknowledgment but was later expanded to the entire month of June in 2002 under former President George W. Bush. Since then, the observation has grown, with Realtors nationwide participating in local community events that promote education and access to homeownership resources.

Along with celebrations, Florida Realtors® encourages potential homebuyers to explore available programs, policies, and assistance designed to make homeownership accessible. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers various resources that provide crucial support for prospective homeowners, including counseling services and information on housing policies.

As June unfolds, Florida Realtors® is engaging with communities across the state to commemorate National Homeownership Month. With the help of dedicated Realtors, many Floridians are turning their dreams of homeownership into reality, investing in a future that promises more than just a place to live—it represents hope, security, and prosperity.

For those looking to learn more about homeownership resources, the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) has curated valuable materials available on its website, which is a great starting point for anyone considering purchasing a home.

Florida Realtors®, which serves as the voice of real estate in Florida, continues to advocate for homeownership through education, services, and legislative representation for over 230,000 members across 47 boards and associations in the state. As we celebrate National Homeownership Month, let us remember the value and power that comes with owning a home and its pivotal role in fostering prosperous communities and stable families.
