Celebrating Excellence in Sake: SAKE HUNDRED's Triumph at IWC 2025
The world-renowned sake brand SAKE HUNDRED, operated by Clear Co., located in Shibuya, Tokyo, has made headlines once again. Between April 14 and April 17, 2025, the prestigious International Wine Challenge (IWC) held its annual event in London, where SAKE HUNDRED's flagship products, Byakko Bespoke and Shirin, both received gold medals in the sake category.
The IWC is considered the largest and most influential sake judging event held outside of Japan, and it recognizes exceptional sake quality, bringing it's winners significant international acclaim.
The award-winning
Byakko Bespoke has maintained its gold medal status for three consecutive years, having won since its launch in 2021. Made from the premier Yamada Nishiki rice, often referred to as the "king of sake rice," this sake is crafted to achieve the perfect balance of sweetness, umami, and acidity. According to IWC judges,
Byakko Bespoke presents a delightful aroma of pineapple, white peach, nectarine, and kumquat, with a palate that showcases flavors of apricot, almond, and apple, leading to a refreshingly juicy and lingering finish.
On the other hand,
Shirin, also a gold medal recipient, boasts an impressive polishing ratio of 18%. This sake is stored briefly in Mizunara barrels from Hokkaido, allowing it to develop a subtle oak aroma that seamlessly integrates into its clear and delicate flavor profile. Judges praised
Shirin for its sweet, lactic notes accompanied by gentle hints of fresh popcorn and the aroma of mochi rice. Its crisp mouthfeel and food-friendly finish make it a versatile pairing for various dishes.
In addition to the accolades for Byakko Bespoke and Shirin, several other offerings from SAKE HUNDRED received recognition, including duplicates and bronze medal winners:
Nikou,
Shinsei with silver medals, and
Hakusou and
Gengai capturing bronze.
This year, the IWC saw a record 1,476 sake entries, with only the top 10% earning gold medals. The
pure rice daiginjo category featured the largest number of submissions, with 52 gold medal winners. The entire event was judged by 70 experts from 18 different countries, underscoring the international significance of the IWC.
Best Sake for Food Pairing
The IWC's reputation goes beyond just awards; it serves as a pivotal platform that elevates Japanese sake’s presence in the global market. With the establishment of the sake section in 2007, the IWC has become a significant event for sake producers keen on internationally highlighting their work.
Winning an IWC gold medal represents immense prestige for any sake, as the event encapsulates the best of what the land of the rising sun has to offer. As such,
SAKE HUNDRED remains dedicated to fulfilling its purpose of enriching lives through exceptional sake. With a focus on high-quality offerings and fostering deeper connections among people, SAKE HUNDRED aims to deliver an unparalleled experience that combines physical, mental, and social satisfaction.
