The 13th Meeting of Microbial Explorers
On April 29, 2026, Okayama University (located in Okayama City, Japan), under the leadership of President Yasuya Nasu, hosted the 13th meeting of the "Microbial Explorers," a research group dedicated to interdisciplinary collaboration and the formation of research hubs. This group was initiated to encourage the interchange among researchers focusing on microorganisms.
The recent meeting was co-hosted with a Mini-Workshop from the International Joint Research Support Program of the Institute of Resource Plant Science at Okayama University, situated in Kurashiki City. Professors Yoji Kawano and Akio Tani, leading figures in the domains of plant immunity and environmental microbiology, welcomed five researchers from Taiwan to participate in discussions about plant stress and plant-microbe interactions.
Workshop Structure
The workshop was structured into two sessions— a morning session featuring presentations by students from the institute and an afternoon session with talks delivered by the visiting researchers from Taiwan. Approximately 40 participants engaged in the discussions, including faculty, students, staff, and academic coordinators from both academia and industry.
The afternoon session began with presentations from five esteemed researchers from the Institute of Plant and Microbial Biology at Academia Sinica and National Taiwan University, covering the latest in plant immunity, genetic control, and disease management strategies. The topics included:
- - Erh-Min Lai (IPMB, Academia Sinica, Research Fellow & Director): "Innovative Approaches to Enhance Agrobacterium-mediated Transformation and Genome Editing"
- - Chih-Hang Wu (IPMB, Academia Sinica, Associate Research Fellow): "Fast and Furious: Plant Hypersensitive Cell Death in Action!"
- - Chin-Min Kimmy Ho (IPMB, Academia Sinica, Associate Research Fellow): "Genetic Regulation of Cuticle Formation in Young Leaves and Drought Response"
- - Hao-Xun Chang (National Taiwan University, Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, Associate Professor): "Rhizoctonia Genomics – From Sclerotia Formation to Fungicide Resistance and Innovative Disease Management"
- - Yuh Tzean (National Taiwan University, Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, Assistant Professor): "Beneath the Surface: Translating Plant Immunity and Biocontrol for Soilborne Pathogen Control"
Following each presentation, engaging discussions and question-and-answer sessions were held, providing invaluable opportunities for further development of research and deepening international collaboration. The event marked significant progress in addressing global agricultural challenges through collective knowledge and research efforts.
Future Endeavors
As the activities of the Microbial Explorers continue to unfold, there is great anticipation for further innovative research and initiatives stemming from these collaborative efforts. The commitment from Okayama University to foster open and distinctive research traditionally encourages enriching interdisciplinary dialogues.
Keep following Okayama University’s endeavors as they pursue being a central hub for research collaboration and exploration in the field of microbiology and plant sciences. This initiative not only heightens the university's academic prestige but also enhances its capability to address broader environmental and agricultural issues effectively.
