This prestigious award, established in conjunction with the United Nations, recognizes organizations worldwide that contribute significantly to solving social issues through digital innovation. The award ceremony took place in Vienna, Austria, with the company's representative, Mr. Imai, in attendance. Notably, this is the eighth award from Japan in the 23-year history of the WSA, underscoring the company’s impactful presence in the global arena.

The Growing Challenge of Misinformation



The proliferation of social media and advancements in generative AI technology have exacerbated the spread of misinformation, posing a significant societal challenge. The Global Risks Report from the World Economic Forum has highlighted misinformation as the most concerning threat for two consecutive years. In Japan, misinformation has wreaked havoc, as exemplified by false rescue requests during the Noto Peninsula earthquake that impeded real-life rescue efforts. Young people are particularly susceptible, often sharing unverified information, highlighting the urgent need to cultivate their ability to question and verify the authenticity of information.

Understanding the World Summit Awards



The World Summit Awards, initiated in 2003 within the framework of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), celebrates digital innovations that tackle social challenges. With participation from over 180 countries, the WSA highlights exceptional projects that address pressing societal issues. The award for Classroom Adventure marks the fifth recognition for Japanese initiatives over the past 23 years, focusing on education that empowers youth in navigating information landscapes.

Among the projects that received accolades were "Ray's Blog" and the "Youth Fact-Checking Championship." These initiatives employ gamification to impart critical information literacy skills to learners in an engaging manner. Instead of instilling fear or anxiety, they empower students to take control of their learning experiences.

Classroom Adventure's Innovative Initiatives



Here’s an overview of the two main programs that led to Classroom Adventure's WSA recognition:

1. Information Literacy Education Program: "Ray's Blog"



"Ray's Blog" is a media literacy education initiative centered around misinformation and disinformation. Currently implemented in educational institutions across 14 countries, it features a captivating interactive puzzle game set in a storyline that utilizes the real internet. Participants naturally acquire cutting-edge verification techniques employed by professional fact-checkers while tackling challenges. The program covers practical skills not typically taught in classrooms, such as distinguishing fake images generated by AI, geographical location identification, and sourcing primary information.

By learning through the experiential process of questioning, investigating, and evaluating information, students develop the skills necessary to discern the truth rather than being swayed by unreliable sources.

2. International Competition: Youth Fact-Checking Championship (GenAsia Challenge)



This international competition invites youth aged 12 to 24 to showcase their fact-checking skills. This year, Classroom Adventure has taken over the stewardship of the "Youth Verification Challenge," previously conducted by Google, and will co-host it with the Japanese Fact-Checking Center (JFC) and fact-checking organizations across Asia starting in 2024.

Designed to help young people navigate the digital world saturated with misinformation, the competition provides a real-world context for developing essential literacy skills through exciting team-based competitions. Winning teams from domestic qualifiers will ultimately compete against representatives from various countries for the championship.

Future Expansion and Global Collaboration



The WSA victory has prompted Classroom Adventure to enhance collaborations with educational institutions and organizations internationally, accelerating its global outreach. As the information landscape continues to evolve, the aim is to deliver foundational literacy skills to learners across diverse regions.

In conjunction with the award ceremony in Vienna, Classroom Adventure organized outreach sessions at the Japanese School in Vienna. Such cross-border initiatives aim to establish new models in information literacy education.
