PULLMAN Recognized with Roger Corbetta Award for Historic Restoration at Alexander Hamilton Customs House
PULLMAN, a renowned name in infrastructure rehabilitation, has garnered significant acclaim by receiving the prestigious Roger Corbetta Award presented by the Concrete Industry Board, the New York chapter of the American Concrete Institute. This award is in recognition of PULLMAN's exceptional work on the restoration and repair project for the historic Alexander Hamilton Customs House in New York City.
The awards ceremony took place on October 28 at the iconic Rainbow Room located in 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Designed by celebrated architect Cass Gilbert, the Alexander Hamilton Customs House stands as a vital historic monument in New York City. It is also recognized as a national historic landmark by the National Park Service, highlighting its cultural and historical significance.
Faced with the challenge of water infiltration that threatened the structural integrity of both the building and its historic interiors, PULLMAN collaborated with Consigli Construction and engineering partner Superstructures to diagnose the sources of the water intrusion. Together, they executed a comprehensive repair strategy, ensuring the preservation of the building’s historic character while keeping operations running smoothly throughout the construction phase.
The Roger Corbetta Award celebrates distinguished accomplishments in concrete repair and restoration, specifically acknowledging the technical complexities involved in addressing water infiltration issues in historically significant structures without disrupting ongoing operations. A pivotal element of this project included the removal of old masonry perimeter walls, replaced with durable and waterproof reinforced concrete walls.
Moreover, this project marked one of the first pilot projects initiated by the U.S. General Services Administration under the Inflation Reduction Act, promoting the use of low-carbon concrete materials in construction. This initiative showcases how historic preservation can align with sustainable building practices.
Sarah Migliore, a project executive at PULLMAN, emphasized the meticulous planning, technical precision, and respect for the building's history that were crucial to restoring such an iconic structure. She stated, "Our team worked diligently to resolve the water infiltration issues while safeguarding the historical elements of the structure and maintaining operations throughout the entire construction process. This award reflects the care and dedication that our team put into this challenging restoration project."
The recognition signifies PULLMAN's commitment to preserving this culturally and historically significant monument. The firm not only addresses critical needs but also supports long-term performance and resilience of the building.
