Shatterproof Welcomes Susan Furtney as New Chief Impact Officer
On September 2, 2026, Shatterproof, a national nonprofit dedicated to combating addiction, announced the appointment of Susan Furtney as its Chief Impact Officer (CIO). This strategic move marks a significant step in the organization's initiative to bolster leadership in addiction prevention, treatment, and policy advocacy.
Furtney comes with a rich background in healthcare strategy, nonprofit leadership, and health equity, amassing over thirty years of experience. Before joining Shatterproof, she served as the Chief Strategy Officer at Health Leads, an organization committed to addressing health inequities. Her previous role at the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate University Hospital underscores her extensive experience, where she managed health services for approximately 1.8 million people in Central New York.
In her new role at Shatterproof, Furtney will manage the organization's impact portfolio, integrating programs geared towards improving treatment quality, public education, community engagement, and research. This multifaceted role ensures alignment between strategies, policies, and community efforts to foster measurable outcomes in addiction care.
Pam Jenkins, the CEO of Shatterproof, expressed her enthusiasm regarding Furtney’s appointment, emphasizing her leadership qualities and vision: “As Shatterproof continues to evolve and scale our impact, Susan brings the strategic vision and healthcare expertise needed to help drive the next chapter of our work.” Given Furtney’s proven track record in managing complex organizations and developing cross-sector partnerships, she is expected to be instrumental in transforming the landscape of addiction services.
Furtney herself expressed her eagerness to take on this pivotal role. She stated, “I am honored to join Shatterproof at such an important moment in its journey. I look forward to working alongside the team, partners, advocates, and families to create meaningful change.” Her passion for reducing barriers to care aligns seamlessly with Shatterproof's mission to ensure that addiction does not define or end lives.
Throughout her career, Furtney has been on the forefront of organizational transformation, successfully implementing community partnerships and advocating for data-informed approaches to health and well-being. At Health Leads, she spearheaded efforts to enhance organizational impact and effectiveness while at Upstate University Hospital, she was pivotal in expanding services that integrate primary care and mental health resources.
Furtney holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Public Health from Emory University. Additionally, she is recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and holds a position on the Board of Trustees for Make-A-Wish Central New York.
