NFL Bolsters ALS Research with $500,000 Commitment to Champion Insights Study
A Significant Step in ALS Research: NFL's $500,000 Commitment
On October 5, 2026, the National Football League (NFL) made a groundbreaking commitment of $500,000 to Champion Insights, a crucial research initiative designed to explore why elite athletes, military veterans, and first responders are at a heightened risk of developing Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This funding was announced during a segment on Good Morning America, where Steve Gleason, a former player for the New Orleans Saints and a prominent ALS advocate, highlighted the importance of this research. Diagnosed with ALS in 2011 himself, Gleason is a pivotal figure in this study, being its first participant.
Gleason emphasized the necessity of moving beyond mere speculation regarding ALS to understand its root causes more deeply. He remarked, "That is not a rumor. It is a fact we have to face with honesty and urgency. I do not spend time on speculation. I spend it asking why. That is the purpose of Champion Insights. We believe the answers will be found in our biology and the traits that come with high-performance lives."
The research initiated by Champion Insights aims to investigate the genetic and biological factors that may contribute to the increased risk of ALS among those involved in high-intensity professions. It is known that individuals in these lines of work may be twice as likely to develop ALS compared to the general population. The initiative, launched earlier in the year, plans to enroll up to 500 participants through remote participation techniques, including in-home blood sample collections and comprehensive surveys designed to assess genetics, lifestyle, environmental influences, and other potential contributing factors.
Clare Durrett, Managing Director of Answer ALS, expressed gratitude for the NFL's commitment, stating, "What makes this investment especially meaningful is the NFL's willingness to help us look deeper into the genetic and biological factors that may contribute to increased ALS risk. We want to understand not just who is more vulnerable, but why. Those answers could be important for everyone facing this disease and ultimately help us find ways to treat and prevent ALS."
The Champion Insights study builds upon the established research framework provided by Answer ALS and the ALS Therapy Development Institute's ARC study. By particularly focusing on populations known to have a higher risk of ALS, the study aims to uncover biological mechanisms relevant to ALS that may also extend to the broader population.
Matt Bellina, a retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander who is living with ALS, added, "As an aviator, we trained to perform at our best, physically, mentally, and professionally. That pursuit of excellence is something we take pride in. But science is beginning to explore whether some of the same biological traits that drive high performance may also contribute to increased ALS risk. Champion Insights is asking why, and those answers could benefit everyone facing this disease."
The study is a collaboration led by Answer ALS in partnership with Augie's Quest to Cure ALS, with research conducted by the ALS Therapy Development Institute and guidance from an Advisory Board of leading ALS experts. The ultimate objective is to translate findings related to increased risk into a more profound understanding of ALS biology, facilitating the development of targeted treatments and preventive strategies for the disease.
For those interested in participating, information regarding eligibility and enrollment can be accessed via the Champion Insights website. Media representatives can also find an overview video and a comprehensive digital media kit through the provided resources.
