This groundbreaking initiative took place in Roatán, Honduras, where Carnival's cruise ship, the Carnival Jubilee, donated a total of 210 portions of prepared but unserved meals. This initiative is part of Carnival Corporation's 'Less Left Over' strategy, which focuses on minimizing food waste across its operations. The meal donation program redirects high-quality surplus meals from the company's ships to address food needs in port communities—wherever its vessels dock. By expanding into the Latin American region, this program is now operational in 18 ports worldwide and has successfully provided over 320,000 meal portions to communities since its inception back in 2017.

Vicky Rey, the company’s vice president of government affairs for Latin America, pointed out that this expansion is crucial in reflecting Carnival’s ongoing commitment to turning surplus food into support for those in need. She expressed appreciation for the collaboration with the Honduran government, especially highlighting the role of President Asfura in enabling this significant donation to occur quickly and efficiently.

Roatán's Mayor, Ron McNab, expressed gratitude toward the partnership with Carnival Corporation, emphasizing the positive community impact that such donations could have on essential services like schools and hospitals. The facilitation process involves stringent food safety standards ensuring that all meals are transferred from ship to shore under the highest safety protocols, as explained by Schalkie Badenhorst, director of food operations at Carnival Cruise Line.

Carnival Corporation has maintained a long-standing presence in Roatán, managing its exclusive cruise destination, Isla Tropicale. Since its opening in 2009, this location has attracted nearly 9 million visitors, generating an economic impact estimated at $750 million and supporting over 1,300 local jobs. Isla Tropicale exists alongside Carnival’s broader ambitions in Latin America, demonstrating its investments through sustainable operations and community support programs.

Achievements in Sustainability


Carnival Corporation takes pride in its achievements towards sustainability; since 2019, it has successfully reduced per-person food waste by 47%, avoiding over $250 million in surplus food costs. The company aims for a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030, showcasing ambitious goals paired with actionable strategies.
