Millington's Historic Groundbreaking for Tennessee's First Lone Sailor Monument
On October 13, 2026, the City of Millington witnessed a momentous occasion as it celebrated the groundbreaking of Tennessee's first Lone Sailor Monument. This event was made possible through a partnership involving the First Horizon Foundation, Navy League Memphis, and the Lone Sailor Monument Committee. The ceremony, coinciding with the United States Navy's 251st birthday, adds another significant chapter to Millington's rich nautical history.
At 5172 Navy Road, a diverse group of community members, including military veterans, local leaders, and representatives from various organizations, gathered to honor those who have served in the Navy. According to City of Millington Mayor, Larry Dagen, "This is a historic day for Millington and for the generations of Sailors who have called this community home. The Navy has been a vital part of our fabric, and today marks a step toward honoring that heritage. We are especially grateful to First Horizon Foundation for its generous support."
The Lone Sailor Monument will not only be a first for the state of Tennessee but will also act as a permanent homage to the service members of the U.S. Navy. The creation of this monument acknowledges the significant relationship between Millington and the Navy, particularly the ongoing impact of the Naval Support Activity Mid-South on the community.
City Manager Frankie Dakin expressed that the groundbreaking symbolizes more than just the start of construction; it encapsulates "the dedication, collaboration, and a shared commitment to honoring our military heritage. Thanks to contributions from First Horizon Foundation and the efforts of Navy League Memphis, we have reached a financial goal that allows us to move forward."
First Horizon Bank's Mid-South Regional President, Bo Allen, remarked, "As the title sponsor, our aim is to help bring a collective vision to life. This plaza will serve as a space for reenlistments, promotions, retirements, and other significant family moments, thus becoming a part of Millington's narrative. We are honored to play a role in building this space of remembrance and celebration."
The groundbreaking ceremony was marked by impressive ceremonies, including a Presentation of Colors by the NJROTC cadets from Millington Central Middle High School, a heartfelt rendition of the National Anthem by Petty Officer First Class Melodie Bradley, and other poignant addresses by dignitaries and naval representatives. The ceremonial turning of soil marked a significant step in establishing a landmark that celebrates Millington’s deep-rooted military legacy.
While the funding needed for the monument has been secured, project partners remain committed to advancing the development of the surrounding memorial plaza, signifying the community's continuous effort to honor its military connections.
