Announcing the 2026 World’s Best Sommeliers’ Selection
In a grand event celebrating wine, the World’s Best Sommeliers’ Selection for 2026 has been unveiled, showcasing the expertise and palate of top sommeliers from around the globe. This esteemed panel, representing 17 different countries across six continents, was organized by the renowned network of The World's 50 Best Restaurants.
The Panel of Judges
Led by Kristell Monot, the chief sommelier at Mugaritz, the judges sampled a wide variety of wines to curate an impressive collection of 115 wines from 16 different countries. This initiative not only highlights the craftsmanship behind each bottle but also serves as a trusted reference for industry professionals keen on exploring diverse wine options.
Highlights of the Selection
Italy emerged as a notable leader in the selection with a total of 20 wines, prominently featuring 13 red varieties. Notably, the Nebbiolo grape shone through with four entries, including distinguished Barolos and Barbarescos. The lineup also embraced contemporary styles, showcasing wines such as a Grenache from Clara Marcelli and a unique Merlot aged underwater from Tenuta Del Paguro.
Following Italy, Portugal made its mark with 18 selected wines across white, red, and fortified categories, demonstrating the richness of its indigenous grape varieties. The line-up included standout whites and robust reds from the Duero region, alongside acclaimed Ports and Madeiras that assert Portugal’s prowess in fortified wines.
The United States contributed 17 exceptional wines, predominantly from California which presented six reds, including the renowned Pinot Noir from Sonoma and the striking Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles. Texas also featured inputs with six unique wines, while Oregon's Lingua Franca secured honors with four varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Spain offered a dynamic collection of seven reds from celebrated regions such as Ribera del Duero, Rioja, and Priorat, alongside noteworthy Jerez that highlights the renewed interest in fortified wines. The sparkling Cava from Pere Ventura further reinforced Spain's strength in bubbly selections and was complemented by contemporary whites from producers like Chivite and Bodegas Faustino, completing an impressive tally of 12 entries.
Argentina's influence was felt with 12 wines, reflecting its renowned Malbec reputation with seven reds. The growing stylistic range was displayed through four whites, particularly a commendable Malbec and Chardonnay from the Uco Valley producer, Rutini. Uruguay secured five spots, Brazil contributed with one white blend, and Chile solidified its representation with eight red wines.
The selection also included contributions from Europe, where France dominated sparkling and rosé categories, while Germany made an impact with three exceptional Rieslings. The Czech producer Gurdau showcased three varieties, including a Riesling and a Grüner Veltliner. Unique contributions from Georgia and Greece added to the lineup, with the former displaying two traditional wines, including the only amber wine in this selection, and Greece contributing both a white and a red.
