Starbucks Launches Mobile Order & Pay for SAVE FOOD Program
Starbucks Coffee Japan has announced an exciting update to its successful "SAVE FOOD" program, which aims to combat food waste. Beginning December 1, 2025, the program will allow customers to purchase discounted food items through the Mobile Order & Pay system across all Starbucks locations nationwide. Previously, items could only be purchased at the store front registers, but this new feature enhances accessibility and encourages more customers to participate.
Overview of the SAVE FOOD Program
Launched in August 2021, the SAVE FOOD program focuses on selling surplus food items such as doughnuts, cakes, and sandwiches at a reduced price of 20% off, available approximately three hours before the store closes. This initiative not only helps reduce food waste but also contributes to the community by donating a portion of the sales to Musubie, a certified non-profit that supports children's cafeterias across Japan.
Starbucks strives to be a resource-positive company, aiming to give back more to the Earth than it takes. This program is a significant step towards their goal of sustainability, fostering community ties while promoting an environmentally conscious approach to food distribution.
Impact through Donations
Since its establishment, the SAVE FOOD program has made significant contributions through donations to Musubie, focusing on enhancing partnerships and networks among children's cafeterias. In 2022, efforts were directed towards building a support network among cafeterias, beginning in areas with limited resources like Niigata Prefecture. By 2023, a local network called "Niigata Children’s Cafeteria Network Niko-net" was established to create safe spaces for children throughout the region.
In 2024, following the Noto Peninsula earthquake, Starbucks expanded its support, reinforcing the importance of network assistance among children's cafeterias in Ishikawa Prefecture. This initiative has not only provided essential resources but also fostered interactions that strengthen community bonds and support systems in the region.
How Mobile Order & Pay Works
When utilizing the Mobile Order & Pay feature, customers can select a participating store, and if available, items included in the SAVE FOOD program will be marked appropriately. Upon completing an order, customers receive a message of gratitude for participating in this vital initiative. It enhances user experience and promotes greater involvement in sustainable practices.
Note that the availability and initiation time of the SAVE FOOD program may vary depending on the stock at each location.
Looking Ahead
Starbucks remains committed to its vision of becoming a resource-positive company. The introduction of Mobile Order & Pay for the SAVE FOOD initiative is just one of the many ways the company aims to tackle food waste and contribute to a sustainable society, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a rich and fulfilling life without compromising the environment.
