Peace and Nuclear Disarmament Forum Raises Awareness on May 5th

On May 5, 2026, in commemoration of Children's Day, a significant event titled the "Peace and Nuclear Disarmament Forum vol.4" was held in Musashino City, Tokyo, Japan. Supported by the Musashino City government and organized by the Pal System Union and the Japan Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, the forum attracted around 200 participants. The main venue was at Musashino Place, with connections to five other co-op locations via online streaming, allowing attendees to engage with the shared experiences of atomic bomb survivors and listen to discussions by young activists advocating for nuclear disarmament.

A Lesson in Resilience and Humanity

The forum aimed to highlight the horrors of war and the inhumanity of nuclear weapons, fostering a sense of peace among younger generations. Backed by 25 supporting organizations, it featured remote locations in Chiba, Ibaraki, Yamanashi, Fukushima, and Shizuoka prefectures, transmitting testimonies from survivors and discussions.

In the opening segment, Rika Watanabe from the international NGO Peace Boat provided an explanation of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Engaging the audience, she asked the children, "Have you ever heard about nuclear weapons?" She described how "Little Boy," the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, was derived from enriched uranium, while "Fat Man," dropped on Nagasaki, was composed of plutonium. This stark contrast between the two bombs highlights the devastating impacts they had, marked by intense blinding flashes and destructive pressure waves.

Watanabe shared her experiences of discussing the atomic bomb overseas, noting how many people recognize images of the mushroom clouds but are often unaware of the human suffering that ensued. She introduced survivor Kōta Katō, who recounted her horrifying memories as a six-year-old survivor of the Hiroshima bombing. Katō shared the tragic details of that fateful day, where she faced unimaginable horrors and subsequent familial losses.

Spreading Seeds of Peace

Katō, who took up ventriloquism motivated by her desire to ensure that the memories of the past endure, recounted her experience of losing her younger brother to radiation burns shortly after the bombing. This traumatic childhood memory drives her mission to educate others about the events of that day, molding a future where conflicts and nuclear weapons do not exist.

Her experiences solidified a compassionate worldview as she recalls her mother, who, after facing the loss of her own child, dedicated herself to caring for other war orphans. Katō expressed her resolve to continue her advocacy, stressing the importance of sharing stories with future generations. "Children today do not bear resentment against America. They want to collaborate towards a world free from nuclear weapons," she explained.

The Dialogue on Peace

The forum also featured a talk session moderated by Yuta Takahashi of Katakawa, who emphasized individual experiences shared by attendees regarding peaceful moments in their lives. Participants from various venues, including children, reflected on everyday experiences of peace, from playing with friends to sharing meals together.

As discussions unfolded, insights were shared about the recent Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference held in New York, where representatives emphasized the collective responsibility to abolish nuclear weapons to ensure a safer world.

Hands-On Activities for Children

In addition to the discussions, the forum included hands-on activities for children, infusing joy and creativity into the event. Activities varied across the five satellite locations, where children participated in workshops creating mementos like peace charms and engaged in cooking traditional wartime recipes, making the lessons on peace and history tangible.

Overall, this gathering was more than just a series of speeches; it was a heartfelt call to strengthen the bonds of community, foster understanding, and strive for a peaceful future. The Pal System Group aims to continue these initiatives, nurturing awareness and encouraging individuals to make contributions towards harmonizing our world by highlighting the value of peace.
