The Art of Fumiko Hori: Embracing Innocence in Tuscany

The upcoming exhibition titled The Art of Fumiko Hori: Embracing Innocence in Tuscany will be held at Nakajima Art in Ginza, Tokyo, from November 13 to 26, 2025. This event spotlights the legacy of the late Japanese painter Fumiko Hori, who passed away at the age of 100 in 2019. The exhibition marks a celebration of her 80-year career, particularly focusing on her time spent in the picturesque Tuscan region of Italy.

In her own words, Hori describes her revelation upon encountering the stunning landscapes of Tuscany: "Amid every swaying wildflower and gently rolling hills filled with wheat fields, olive groves, and rural homes reminiscent of medieval fortresses—all captured vividly—my weary Japanese heart was rejuvenated and cleansed here." This statement sets the tone for exploring her creative process and emotional connection to this beloved land.

Hori settled in Arezzo, Tuscany, in March 1987 at the age of 68, moving away from the bustling bubble economy of Japan. She chose a noble villa situated away from touristy areas, allowing her to immerse herself in the local scenery. Surrounded by charming medieval villages and cypress-lined roads, Hori found inspiration everywhere she looked. This transformative experience led to her spending half of each year in Italy, deeply engrossed in sketching and painting the surroundings.

In 1992, to honor the 500th anniversary of Renaissance master Piero della Francesca, Hori was invited to showcase her work at the Fumiko Hori Exhibition of Japanese Painting in Arezzo. This exhibition featured about 40 of her paintings and sketches, receiving a warm reception from the community.

The upcoming exhibition in Ginza will showcase sketches and Japanese paintings created during Hori's five-year immersion in Tuscany, providing attendees with a rare opportunity to view these exquisite works. Among the pieces on display will be notable sketches like Nude, Frozen Winter Field, and Tuscany Countryside, all reflecting her masterful touch and emotional depth.

Hori’s background is equally fascinating. Born in 1918 in Tokyo, she graduated from the Women's Art School (now known as Joshibi University of Art and Design). Hori made notable contributions to the New Art Association and various major exhibitions after WWII. She embodied the philosophy of "Ichijo Fushuku" (meaning to settle without settling) and lived in multiple locations in Japan and abroad, ultimately establishing her studio in Arezzo at 69. Beyond her paintings, she published many essays sharing her thoughts on art and life.

Fumiko Hori continued to actively engage in art until her passing, with many retrospective exhibitions held in recent years. The Nakajima Art Gallery has been a significant part of her journey, regularly featuring her works and supporting future artists as well. Don’t miss this chance to witness the very spirit and creativity of Hori as reflected in her stunning representations of Tuscany.
