Introduction
In an impressive achievement, Heisei Construction Co., Ltd., based in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, has won the prestigious Good Design Award for two of its remarkable projects: the architectural service "MoKkoukan" and the rental apartment "COURETTE". This recognition symbolizes the excellence in design and innovation that the company consistently delivers.
MoKkoukan: The Fusion of Architecture and Furniture
MoKkoukan is a unique architectural service that creatively integrates furniture into residential construction. The idea is impressive; by collaborating early in the building process, carpenters work alongside architects and homeowners, allowing for seamless integration of furniture and architecture. This innovative approach not only streamlines the complex construction process but also enhances the incorporation of previously unused materials, transforming the homeowner's vision into a tangible reality.
One of the highlights of MoKkoukan is the display of over 150 carefully selected rare wooden slabs that allow homeowners to personally connect with the materials. By personally touring the facility with skilled carpenters, they gain a deeper understanding of the historical significance and uniqueness of each piece. This collaborative environment helps alleviate common design discrepancies that can arise between architectural elements and furniture.
Commitment to ensuring that client-specific materials are considered, MoKkoukan allows for prior discussions between carpenters and clients before construction planning. This means that even the homeowner’s special timber can be judiciously utilized, fostering a constructive dialogue that creates not just a house but a cherished home. Furthermore, the partnership with architects allows for simultaneous discussions about other architectural features like platforms and windows, enhancing overall space quality.
Design Highlights of MoKkoukan
- - Incorporation of furniture production into the construction process reduces timelines and ensures cohesive design.
- - A plethora of over 150 rare solid wood slabs on display facilitates unique design choices for homeowners.
- - Early collaboration with carpenters brings the possibility of repurposing beloved materials or trees into the project.
COURETTE: Embodying Traditional Japanese Beauty
The rental apartment complex, COURETTE, exemplifies the beauty of traditional Japanese aesthetics through its minimalist yet sophisticated design. It employs concrete in a manner that inspires warmth and character, enhanced by the use of cedar board forms, which dignifies its appearance over time. Shared spaces like hallways and courtyards are thoughtfully designed to foster community interaction among residents, blending living space with a communal atmosphere.
With a height of 10 meters, the four-story building was ingeniously designed to appear as a three-story structure with a ceiling measurement of 3.3 meters, creating airy living quarters conducive for emotional and mental well-being. The use of colored concrete within a framework helps achieve a clean, contemporary exterior, while vertical louvres subtly conceal utilities, preserving the aesthetic integrity of the design. Rich plant life surrounds the structure, enriching pedestrian experiences and enhancing the neighborhood’s vibe.
Design Highlights of COURETTE
- - Spacious interiors with a ceiling height of 2.6m to 3m and textured walls crafted from exposed concrete, all while prioritizing comfort.
- - Careful selection of pre-fabricated components complements custom-built designs for superior maintenance and aesthetic appeal.
- - Exceptional concrete construction techniques allow the structural materials to be prominently showcased, ensuring both durability and elegance.
Evaluation by the Jury
An esteemed evaluation of MoKkoukan revealed that its design process is not only innovative but also educational. The intricate wood patterns represent more than just aesthetics; they symbolize the rich heritage of woodworking and craftsmanship. The opportunity for clients to learn from these displays fosters appreciation for quality materials and lifespan,
creating mindful consumers committed to sustainability.
COURETTE’s jury remarks resonated with craft and integrity, emphasizing that a well-executed design with quality materials—though seemingly conventional—can stand the test of time and adapt to various family needs, ensuring longevity in design.
