POWERCHINA Expands Wind Power and Energy Storage in Egypt Amid Sustainable Transition

POWERCHINA's Commitment to Egypt's Energy Future

In a significant step for renewable energy, Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) is rolling out an ambitious portfolio of wind power initiatives in Egypt, designed to exceed a staggering 1.8 gigawatts (GW). This important undertaking comes as part of a broader effort to bolster local energy storage solutions and expand manufacturing capabilities, aligning with Egypt's strategic goals for increasing its renewable energy output and accelerating its energy transition.

Celebrating Diplomatic Ties

As China and Egypt celebrate an impressive 70 years of diplomatic relations, the focus on green development highlights a new era of cooperation between the two nations. These wind power initiatives not only signify a commitment to sustainable practices but also aim to strengthen economic ties through shared interests in renewable technologies.

A Robust Wind Power Portfolio

POWERCHINA's investment in Egypt includes several key projects. Among them is the Amunet Gulf of Suez Wind Project, boasting a capacity of 500 MW, which is currently operational. Additionally, two significant undertakings are underway: the 1.1 GW Gulf of Suez Wind Project and the 202.5 MW Ras Ghareb Wind Project. The operational challenges faced during the construction phase of the Amunet Wind Farm, such as extreme temperatures, high winds, and sand erosion, were addressed through meticulous planning. To ensure safety and efficiency, concrete pouring was scheduled during cooler evening hours, and wind conditions were carefully monitored during turbine installations. These efforts culminated in the project receiving its acceptance certificate ahead of schedule and winning the 2025 RoSPA Health and Safety Award.

Entering the Energy Storage Arena

In an evolving strategy, POWERCHINA is not limiting itself to just wind energy. In August 2026, the company initiated the construction of a new energy storage manufacturing facility in Ain Sokhna. This 50,000-square-meter site aims to support local production and nurture talent, contributing significantly to Egypt's clean energy supply chain. Furthermore, it marks the establishment of Sungrow's first battery energy storage manufacturing base in the Middle East and Africa, showcasing POWERCHINA’s pivotal role in fostering regional development.

Job Creation and Skill Development

Since its entry into the Egyptian market in 2012, POWERCHINA has established a robust presence that includes the creation of over 2,000 direct jobs and more than 10,000 indirect job opportunities. The company emphasizes the importance of training as well, having successfully onboarded and trained over 350 professionals in both traditional and renewable energy sectors. The training covers vital areas such as quality control, health and safety protocols, social management, logistics, and more. This commitment to local workforce development reflects POWERCHINA's long-term vision for Egypt's energy future.

Collaborative Partnerships

POWERCHINA’s partnerships extend to numerous Egyptian suppliers, subcontractors, and other local enterprises. Engaging local contractor Elalamya General Contracting has facilitated collaboration on various projects, including the 500 MW Amunet Wind Project. Mahmoud, the head of Elalamya, emphasized the value of their partnership with POWERCHINA, expressing optimism for future collaborations and the friendships developed throughout their journey.

A Broader Clean Energy Ecosystem

POWERCHINA's expanding footprint in Egypt represents a paradigm shift from isolated project executions to an integrated clean energy framework. This holistic approach encompasses energy generation, storage solutions, and the enhancement of local industrial capabilities. Going forward, POWERCHINA aims to continue collaborating with both domestic and international partners, advancing clean energy initiatives that align with Egypt's national energy strategy and contribute to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Through these endeavors, POWERCHINA is not just helping in the energy transition but is also laying the foundation for a sustainable future in Egypt, reinforcing the importance of renewable resources in meeting the country's growing energy demands.
