COCOLON: A Community for Children with Severe Disabilities Awarded the 19th Kids Design Award

COCOLON's Achievement at the 19th Kids Design Award

COCOLON, operated by the non-profit organization EPO, based in Edogawa, Tokyo, is proud to announce that it has been awarded the 19th Kids Design Award in the category aimed at creating a design environment that enables easier parenting. This award is presented by the Japan Kids Design Association and recognizes excellent products, services, and activities that contribute to creating a society where children can be born and raised safely and creatively.

Providing Experiences for Children with Severe Disabilities

COCOLON focuses on providing children and families caring for those with severe physical and mental disabilities engage in various educational and recreational activities. Their mission is to eliminate the notion that certain experiences are unattainable due to disabilities. Throughout 2024, COCOLON will host a total of 34 events and seminars, with 997 participants, 439 of whom are children. Feedback from families indicates that they feel not only enjoyment but a sense of safety when participating in COCOLON activities.

Events like the annual sports day, referred to as Kokone Festival, and theme celebrations such as Halloween, aim to create an inclusive environment where families can engage comfortably and freely.

Addressing Family Isolation

According to a study conducted in 2018, nearly half of families with medically fragile children reported feeling isolated from society due to the challenges they face regarding access to services and support. Here are some striking statistics from the survey:
  • - 48.3% feel they lack opportunities for age-appropriate enjoyment and therapy.
  • - 45.1% are unaware of available support services for their medically required children.
  • - 65.3% find outings incredibly challenging.
  • - 51.3% feel socially isolated.

Given these statistics, it’s clear that an overwhelming number of families struggle with isolation and access to basic social needs and support. COCOLON recognizes this and works to create a platform where families can connect with those who share similar experiences and challenges. By forming friendships and sharing insights, these engagements foster a support system that assists in alleviating the burden of child-rearing for families facing these challenges.

Committing to a Brighter Future

Winning the Kids Design Award serves as both a recognition and motivation for COCOLON to continue its mission of providing enriching experiences for children with disabilities. The organization aims to create a supportive community that prioritizes healthy family life and supports child-rearing, thereby contributing to building a society that simplifies the challenges of parenting.
