Explore the Amaro Summit 2025 in Tokyo
Mark your calendars for April 20, 2025, as the Amaro Summit 2025 arrives in Tokyo, organized by the Tohoku-based group, Glass of TOHOKU. This event highlights Amaro, a herbal liqueur that's currently gaining popularity in Japan, with both domestic and imported brands seeing an increase in consumption. The rise of Japanese Amaro makers showcases the versatility of local ingredients and the growing interest in this unique spirit from Italy.
What is Amaro?
Amaro, which means “bitter” in Italian, is a type of herbal liqueur made by infusing spirits or wines—typically fermented from grapes or grains—with a diverse array of botanicals, including herbs, spices, and citrus peels. The infusion process creates a balance of sweetness and gentle bitterness, resulting in a drink that is both flavorful and refreshing, with an alcohol content typically ranging from 15% to 35%. Bartenders and alcohol enthusiasts worldwide have embraced Amaro for its unique taste and ease of drinking.
Growth of Domestic Production
The rising popularity of Amaro has led to a notable increase in imports into Japan, but it also paved the way for local producers to create their versions. Notable producers such as Iseya Shuzo in Kanagawa and Kanekasaki Herbal Sake Brewery in Iwate have begun crafting Japanese Amaro, which features local herbs and citrus fruits. As a result, you may increasingly find these offerings on menus in specialty bars and establishments.
