Allergy & Asthma Day on Capitol Hill Highlights Need for Affordable Care Access

Spotlight on Allergy & Asthma Day

On May 7, 2025, Allergy & Asthma Network will hold its 28th annual Allergy & Asthma Day Capitol Hill (AADCH) in Washington, DC, uniting patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals with lawmakers to address the critical issues impacting those with asthma and allergies.

Millions of Americans living with these conditions often face considerable challenges in accessing necessary treatments, primarily caused by strict policies practiced by pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). Recent developments, including the closure of the National Asthma Control Program (NACP) by the CDC, exacerbate these challenges, further restricting access to vital resources for effective asthma management.

Addressing Policy Concerns

This year, the theme of the event emphasizes the urgent need for policy reform surrounding PBMs, which have garnered increased bipartisan scrutiny from Congress. Patients often encounter frustrating delays and high costs for medications due to PBM policies that lack transparency and fairness. Recent legislative measures have begun to focus on reforming these practices, specifically targeting prior authorizations and step therapy that complicate patient access to their prescribed medications.

Lynda Mitchell, the CEO of Allergy & Asthma Network, stated, "People with asthma and allergies deserve transparency and fairness in medication pricing. PBM reform is a critical step toward putting patients before profits and ensuring uninterrupted access to the treatments they need to thrive."

In addition to pushing for PBM reform, advocates will call for the reinstatement of the NACP at the CDC. The program’s efforts in promoting evidence-based care and improving the quality of asthma treatment have significantly driven down hospitalization and mortality rates associated with asthma. Its closure could have detrimental effects on ongoing management of such chronic conditions.

Legislative Priorities

As part of their advocacy, Allergy & Asthma Network will support key pieces of legislation aimed directly at benefiting asthma and allergy patients:

1. Chronic Disease Flexible Coverage Act: This act allows employees covered under high-deductible health plans access to chronic disease treatments before they reach their deductible, unlocking necessary care without upfront costs.
2. HELP Copays Act: This legislation seeks to ensure that the value of copay assistance is accounted for regarding deductibles or out-of-pocket maximums, providing financial relief to patients.
3. One School One Nurse Act: In a bid to address the critical shortage of school nurses, this act promotes grants for recruitment and retention of nursing staff in public schools.
4. Protecting Children with Food Allergies Act: This act would mandate that school food service staff undergo training regarding food allergies to safeguard children at school.

A Celebration of Advocacy

To coincide with the advocacy day events, Allergy & Asthma Network will celebrate its 40th anniversary by reflecting on its successes and ongoing commitment to fighting for health policies that benefit those living with asthma and allergies. The festivities kick off on May 6 with a special reception at The Morrow Hotel in Washington, DC, designed to connect advocates and commemorate the strides made over four decades.

On the day of the AADCH, a Congressional Lunch Briefing will be held where members of the Congressional Asthma & Allergy Caucus, patient advocates, and allergist experts will discuss pressing issues and offer insights into the pivotal reforms required in the healthcare system.

For advocates unable to attend the in-person events, there are still opportunities to engage by contacting legislators through their Take Action page, which lists ongoing campaigns needing support. Template emails are provided to make advocacy easier than ever.

As we celebrate 40 years of impactful advocacy, Allergy & Asthma Network continues to empower individuals and communities, promoting health policies that lead to meaningful change for patients with allergies and asthma. Mitchell emphasizes, "Whether in person or online, every advocate who participates in our annual Capitol Hill Day strengthens our collective voice and amplifies our impact."
