BLUETTI and UN-Habitat Collaborate to Boost Clean Energy Access in Africa
Enhancing Clean Energy Access in Africa
In a significant move towards sustainable development, global clean energy leader BLUETTI has enhanced its partnership with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to accelerate access to sustainable and clean energy across Africa. This expansion builds upon a four-year initiative known as Lighting African Families (LAAF), which began in Kenya and aims to provide renewable energy solutions to underprivileged communities.
The Initiative's Impact in Kenya
LAAF's current focus is on supporting 500 families and over 2,000 residents from marginalized urban and peri-urban communities in Kenya, emphasizing households led by women. By providing them with solar lighting systems and energy storage solutions, the project addresses urgent energy needs while fostering local empowerment.
The partnership gained momentum during the 2025 Devolution Conference held from August 12-15, where BLUETTI presented its initiatives amid discussions surrounding housing, urban resilience, and smart city solutions. This conference underlined the pivotal role of affordable clean energy in building a sustainable future for all, showcasing a united commitment from various stakeholders, including the Kenyan government.
Community Engagement and Training
As part of the partnership, BLUETTI is actively engaging communities in the two urban areas of Muhoroni, a rapidly growing suburban region in Kisumu County, as well as among informal settlements in central Nairobi, namely EX-Grogon and Mathare. Through technology transfer and training programs, BLUETTI has distributed 500 solar lighting kits to benefit 2,000 residents. The initiative is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by 337.5 tons over five years, enhancing both urban resilience and environmental awareness within the communities.
Oumar Sylla, Director of the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Africa, expressed, “The partnership with BLUETTI allows us to provide renewable energy to vulnerable families in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly female-headed households. This demonstrates the effectiveness of UN partnership models with the private sector.” Sir James Ray, spokesperson for BLUETTI, echoed these sentiments, stating, “We are proud to amplify our joint efforts with UN-Habitat in fulfilling our mission to promote sustainable development goals.”
Future Ventures Beyond Kenya
Following the successful launch of this initiative in Kenya, BLUETTI and UN-Habitat are looking to extend their collaborative programs into other African nations, reaffirming their commitment to sustainable development and equitable energy access. With BLUETTI's innovative technologies, such as home battery power systems and portable power stations, the company has earned the trust of over 3.5 billion users across more than 110 countries, remaining dedicated to long-term sustainable growth and responsible innovation.
The Goals of UN-Habitat
UN-Habitat is the leading UN agency focused on urbanization, advocating for socially and environmentally sustainable cities and communities. The organization collaborates with global partners to foster inclusive, resilient development while working to reduce inequalities, discrimination, and poverty.
Through initiatives like LAAF, BLUETTI and UN-Habitat are not only providing technical solutions but are also driving social change, empowering communities, and contributing to the broader goal of achieving universal access to clean energy. Together, they envision an Africa where clean energy is accessible to everyone, laying a foundation for sustainable futures and resilient communities.
