Consumers Energy's Initiative for Customers in Need
Consumers Energy, a leading energy provider in Michigan, has launched a significant initiative to support its customers facing financial difficulties. In a commendable effort, the company has pledged $2 million to help qualifying electric and natural gas customers manage their past due summer utility bills. This initiative comes as a much-needed relief for many households struggling to keep up with their energy costs.
The funds will be distributed through trusted community partners, The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW) and The Salvation Army. Lauren Snyder, Consumers Energy's Senior Vice President, emphasized the importance of this support in ensuring families can access necessary assistance during challenging times. "We want anyone who's concerned about making ends meet to know you can count on us to help ease some of the costs of energy bills," Snyder remarked, highlighting the company's commitment to its customers.
Eligibility Requirements for Assistance
To qualify for the one-time assistance payment, customers must meet specific criteria. Applicants need to be past due on their payments, face a shut-off, or have an outstanding balance at a previous address. The program is based on income, with variations depending on household size. For instance, an individual earning less than $62,060 annually, or a family of four with a combined income under $128,600, will qualify for assistance. The partner agencies will assess eligibility and determine the specific amount of support a household could receive based on their discretion.
Partnership with Local Agencies
The partnership with THAW and The Salvation Army is a crucial element of this initiative. Kimberly Burton, CEO of THAW, expressed gratitude for Consumers Energy's ongoing commitment to the well-being of Michigan families and communities. She stated, "We are profoundly grateful for their generosity, partnership and shared dedication to the well-being of our Michigan families and communities." Similarly, Lt. Colonel Steve Merritt of The Salvation Army acknowledged the increasing demand for utility assistance, noting that many families rely on their services as a last hope. He further emphasized the importance of Consumers Energy's contributions in helping families remain in their homes during these trying times.
Previous Contributions and Ongoing Support
This $2 million pledge follows a prior contribution of $5 million earlier this year that provided essential support to customers during the winter season. The company remains dedicated to assisting their clients, having helped over 137,000 Michiganders obtain approximately $69 million from various sources to cover energy expenses in 2024 alone.
Snyder reiterated Consumers Energy's commitment, stating, "We are dedicated to the people who count on us for energy and provide assistance that allows people to stay safe and comfortable in any season."
