Four Talented Illinois Students Compete in National Mott Million Dollar Challenge Finals

In an impressive showcase of ingenuity and entrepreneurship, four students from Illinois have been selected as semifinalists in the prestigious Mott Million Dollar Challenge, taking place in Flint, Michigan. This national pitch competition is designed for K-12 students and aims to highlight the creativity and business acumen of young innovators across the United States.

The competition garnered participation from more than 5,300 students across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., with a staggering total of over 3,700 business ideas and social solutions submitted. After rigorous evaluation, the challenge filtered these ideas down to 1,500 in the first round. Ultimately, only 60 submissions, including those from the Illinois students, advanced to the live pitches scheduled for June 15-16 in downtown Flint.

The students representing Illinois are eager to showcase their projects, each of which aims to provide unique solutions to everyday challenges. Their ideas include:

  • - Math Excite — Proposed by Sawyer Breen, a 4th grader from Mokena Intermediate School, this educational platform gamifies the learning experience by using space-themed adventures and challenges to teach math concepts. The aim is to make math more engaging and accessible for young learners.

  • - KALM ReCover — Developed by high school juniors Kelly Hu, Abigail May, and Lakhi Thotakura from Naperville North High School, this project focuses on health and wellness. Their innovative solution is a portable wearable therapy band that integrates heating and cooling technology to provide effective pain relief and support recovery while on the go.

As semifinalists, these students will receive $5,000, regardless of the competition's outcome. They are set to pitch their ideas live in front of a panel of judges, personnel from the Mott Foundation, and a wider audience during the exciting final competition.

The Mott Million Dollar Challenge is funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation as part of its centennial celebrations. It is organized in collaboration with the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), VentureLab, and several educational and youth development organizations. This initiative underscores the importance of entrepreneurship education by providing students with real-world skills necessary for their future.

The challenge highlights not only the creativity of the participants but also their ability to think critically and solve problems that affect their communities. It aims to inspire students to follow their entrepreneurial passions and equip them with the skills to navigate and reshape their futures.

As the June finals approach, the excitement builds as these Illinois semifinalists prepare to present their innovative ideas to judges and the public. The Mott Million Dollar Challenge serves as an incredible platform for young innovators to shine and make their mark on the entrepreneurial landscape.
