The 80th Anniversary of the Stilwell Road: Celebrating U.S.-China Friendship and Cooperation

In 2023, President Xi Jinping wrote a heartfelt letter to the Stilwell family, emphasizing the importance of fostering the spirit of collaboration between China and the United States. His message called for the continuation of efforts that promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples. This gesture reflects the historical bonds that have developed over the past 80 years since the establishment of the Stilwell Road, a vital supply route during World War II linking India and Kunming in China's Yunnan province through northern Myanmar.

A Significant Historical Route

The Stilwell Road, named after U.S. General Joseph Stilwell, played a crucial role in supporting China's war efforts against Japan, symbolizing international cooperation and shared sacrifices. This road was vital for transporting weapons, fuel, and medical supplies, serving as a lifeline during challenging times.

To honor this historical significance, a five-day celebration began on September 4, 2025, at the Stilwell Museum in Chongqing. The event saw nine family members of Stilwell, including his great-granddaughters Nancy Millward and Susan Cole, join historians and experts from both China and the U.S. to pay homage to his legacy. The highlight was the unveiling of a life-size bronze statue of General Stilwell, depicted with a determined expression and a rifle slung over his shoulder. Susan Cole remarked, “This statue is a testament to the deep affection the Chinese people hold for him, as well as his deep attachment to the Chinese people.”

Exploring Historical Sites

On September 5, the family visited various historical sites in Yunnan, including the Stilwell Museum and the Wanding Bridge, where Dennis Cox collected stones as keepsakes. They also paused for reflection at the National Military Cemetery in Tengchong, the final resting place of thousands of Chinese soldiers and 19 Americans. Nancy Millward expressed, “Being here is a completely different experience. It is essential for our children to learn about their family heritage and the connections he built with the Chinese people.” The family laid flowers at the Sunshan battlefield for Chinese and Allied soldiers, paying respects to the hardships faced during 1944.

Cultural Exchanges and Concluding in Shanghai

The journey included cultural exchanges, such as visiting the Daqianwan Primary School in Chongqing, where the family shared wartime stories with students, played football, and engaged in traditional crafts. The family concluded their trip in Shanghai at the former residence of Soong Ching Ling, a close friend of General Stilwell. This stop highlighted how personal ties supplement wartime alliances, reinforcing the enduring spirit of U.S.-China friendship.

The Stilwell Road remains a powerful symbol of courage, cooperation, and international solidarity, reminding both nations of the lasting value of friendship and human exchange.
