Museums by Candlelight: A Celebration of Frederick's History

December 13, more than
25 historic locations, museums, and
cultural organizations across Frederick County will open their doors to the community, offering free admission and specially designed programming from noon until the evening.
This cherished holiday tradition invites both locals and visitors alike to delve into the rich history of Frederick County in a festive atmosphere. As guests meander from one historical site to another, they will have the chance to engage in hands-on activities, partake in family-friendly experiences, and learn about the intriguing narratives that have shaped this vibrant region.

250th anniversary in 2026, this year's Museums by Candlelight provides a timely reflection on the diverse stories, influential individuals, and historic places that comprise the fabric of our shared history. Scott Keefer, co-chair of the Frederick Historic Sites Consortium, enthusiastically shares, “Museums by Candlelight is one of the most welcoming and wide-ranging events our historic sites and museums host all year. It's an opportunity for people to venture into places they've perhaps driven by countless times and uncover the historical significance behind our communities.”
Each participating site offers a unique experience—whether it’s local customs, stunning architecture, or the cozy charm of the holiday season, attendees will find something new and exciting at every stop. As Keefer notes, “This event is a reminder that Frederick County's history is inextricably linked to the nation's narrative.”
