Celebrating Second Graduating Class of Baltimore's Excel Center
On September 19, 2025, an inspiring event is set to take place in Baltimore as Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake celebrates the graduation of its second class of adult learners from the Baltimore Excel Center, a free high school for adults. At the University of Maryland Baltimore's SMC Campus Center, graduates will don caps and gowns to receive their long-awaited high school diplomas, a significant accomplishment for many. This occasion marks a remarkable journey for those who once faced challenges completing their education, reflecting the center's mission of providing second chances and opportunities to rewrite their futures.
The Excel Center was established as a response to the urgent educational needs in Baltimore, where over 80,000 residents are without a high school diploma. Catering to a diverse group of learners aged from their twenties to their eighties, the center offers a supportive environment where individuals — ranging from parents to workforce members — can return to education and realize their goals. According to Lisa Rusyniak, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, these graduates exemplify resilience and determination, proving that it is never too late for a fresh start.
Beyond academics, the Excel Center provides a holistic educational experience with wraparound services. These include free on-site childcare, career coaching, and the opportunity to earn certifications in high-demand fields such as healthcare, technology, and trade skills. The resources available make it easier for students to juggle education, employment, and personal responsibilities. In Maryland, obtaining a high school diploma can significantly enhance one’s earning potential, bringing an average of $8,622 more annually. This financial stability paves the way for better job opportunities and a secure future.
The graduating class this year includes recent participants from Goodwill's Workforce Development Skills Training Programs. These programs, which prepare individuals for careers as Certified Nursing Assistants, Pharmacy Technicians, and in various building trades, demonstrate Goodwill’s commitment to equipping people with both educational and vocational skills, nurturing their journeys towards successful employment.
Many graduates have overcome significant obstacles during their studies, including full-time jobs, parenting duties, and housing instability. Their success highlights the Excel Center's mission of breaking down barriers to education, empowering adults to thrive in academics and beyond.
