First Global Patient Enters CAR-T Therapy for Solid Tumors at Jiahui International Cancer Center

Pioneering CAR-T Treatment at Jiahui International Cancer Center

In a significant milestone for cancer treatment and global medicine, the Jiahui International Cancer Center (JICC) in Shanghai has welcomed its first international patient to receive Satri-cel, the pioneering CAR-T therapy specifically approved for solid tumors. This historic event not only marks a breakthrough in cancer care but also showcases China's advancements in oncology.

Patient Profile

Josh, a 59-year-old man from New Zealand, bears the weight of a daunting diagnosis. He has been battling advanced gastrointestinal cancer, and after exhausting conventional treatment options available in his home country, his journey led him to Shanghai. Following a comprehensive assessment that included biomarker testing, Josh was found to have Claudin-18.2 positivity and HER2 negativity, which qualified him as a candidate for the revolutionary therapy that is currently exclusive to China.

The Treatment Process

At JICC, a multidisciplinary approach was employed to evaluate and craft a personalized treatment strategy for Josh. The first step in this journey was successfully completing leukapheresis, a procedure that extracts the patient's T cells for further modification in the lab. As of now, these CAR-T cells are undergoing the manufacturing process, with the reinfusion back into Josh's body scheduled in the coming weeks.

Significance of Satri-cel

This treatment is particularly noteworthy as it follows the recent approval of Satri-cel in China — marking it as the world's first CAR-T therapy for solid tumors. This therapy enhances the landscape of cellular immunotherapy, solidifying China's burgeoning role in global oncology innovation.

Dr. Linli Xuan, head of Medical Oncology at JICC, emphasizes the importance of this milestone, stating, "The approval of Satri-cel not only benefits patients with advanced gastric cancer but also signifies a historic achievement in the future of oncology worldwide. We are honored that the first international patient chose JICC for this groundbreaking treatment. As innovative therapies developed in China gain international recognition, we're seeing increasing interest from patients globally seeking access to these advances. Our goal is to seamlessly connect cutting-edge therapies with comprehensive multidisciplinary care for our international patients."
