Alliant International University Unveils Statue of Responsibility

In a grand ceremony held on June 9, 2025, Alliant International University in San Diego dedicated a remarkable 15-foot Statue of Responsibility to honor the legacy of Dr. Viktor Frankl, a renowned psychologist and author of the celebrated book Man's Search for Meaning. This significant event not only commemorates Frankl’s profound impact on psychology but also emphasizes the vital connection between freedom and responsibility.

Dr. Frankl, a Holocaust survivor, emphasized, throughout his life, the essential role of personal choice and accountability in achieving true freedom. His famous quote underscores this philosophy: "Freedom threatens to degenerate into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness." For Frankl, the essence of life lies in one’s ability to confront adversity, maintain personal agency, and find a purpose amidst suffering.

The Statue of Responsibility was envisioned based on Frankl’s belief that there should be a balance to the Statue of Liberty—representing freedom—on the East Coast, with a counterpart that embodies responsibility on the West Coast. This duality is symbolized in the statue itself, created by sculptor Gary Lee Price, which depicts two hands clasped at the wrists, signifying both the act of reaching out for help and offering assistance.

Andy Vaughn, President and CEO of Alliant International University, expressed the institution’s commitment to upholding the values reflected in the statue. He noted that these values—Inclusion, Mentorship, Passion, Accountability, Communication, and Teamwork (collectively known as IMPACT)—align seamlessly with Frankl’s vision of contributing meaningfully to society. Vaughn stated, "This statue is a powerful symbol of the values we strive to live out every day at Alliant."

The unveiling ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries, faculty members, and students, showcasing the strong community support for the ideals that Dr. Frankl championed. As Steve Cohen, President and CEO of the Statue of Responsibility Foundation, stated, “It is a fitting tribute to the memory and life lessons offered by Viktor Frankl here at Alliant.” He reiterated that the statue serves as an enduring reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and our collective capacity to tackle challenges through responsibility.

Frankl’s teachings inspire countless individuals to reflect on their attitudes and choices in the face of adversity. His philosophy, which drives home the message that life inherently presents us with challenges, encourages individuals to rise to these challenges and fulfill their potential. This strong sense of personal responsibility is critical, as it empowers people to create positive change in their lives and the lives of others.

Dr. Frankl’s legacy continues to thrive at Alliant International University, an institution dedicated to developing future leaders across various fields, including psychology, education, business, and health sciences. The statue acts not only as a tribute to Frankl’s life and teachings but also as a part of Alliant’s commitment to fostering an environment where students learn to navigate the complexities of life with courage and responsibility.

As the statue stands tall on campus, it calls upon students, faculty, and visitors alike to reflect on Frankl’s profound message: that true freedom includes the inherent duty to find meaning and take responsibility in one’s life. The unveiling of this statue marks a new chapter in the storied legacy of Dr. Viktor Frankl, reminding all who encounter it of the enduring power of choice and the importance of responsibility in our lives.
