Delivering the Joy of Reading to South African Children with Mobile Libraries

Bringing the Joy of Reading to South Africa

In South Africa, there exists a significant disparity in educational opportunities, particularly in access to reading materials. While some private schools boast advanced educational environments comparable to those of Western countries and Japan, many public schools continue to lack proper libraries and sufficient books for students. Despite improvements in school infrastructure, the availability of children's literature in public schools remains inadequate. This situation emphasizes the need for initiatives that allow children to engage with books and experience the joy of reading.

SAPESI-Japan's Initiative

To tackle this issue, the non-profit organization Sapesi-Japan has partnered with the South African Department of Education to implement mobile library services that reach schools lacking libraries or reading materials. By repurposing mobile library vehicles that have completed their service in Japan, Sapesi-Japan not only provides essential educational resources but also creates opportunities for children to discover and enjoy literature. Currently, they have successfully delivered 54 mobile libraries and approximately 200,000 children's books to South Africa.

When the mobile library arrives at a primary school, children eagerly gather in the schoolyard, lining up to choose their favorite books. Their enthusiasm and focus as they delve into their chosen stories inspire hope for a brighter future in South Africa.

Background of the Initiative

The mobile library project was initiated in response to several challenges:
1. Improving literacy: The South African government has prioritized enhancing literacy rates among students.
2. Limited exposure to books: Many schools have a shortage of reading materials, affecting both teachers and students.
3. Support for educational resources: There is a pressing need for assistance in utilizing books effectively in the educational system.
4. Cultural significance: Educating students about local tribal languages and cultural heritage is essential.

The mobile library is designed to address these challenges directly at the community level, providing an effective educational support system.

Our Vision

At Sapesi-Japan, we envision a future where every child in South Africa has access to books. Each mobile library vehicle requires approximately 1.5 million yen to cover maintenance, storage, and transportation costs. Our activities rely on the generous support of local governments for vehicle provision, as well as donations from businesses and individuals, along with contributions of children's books.

We are committed to continuing our mobile library operations in order to deliver the joy of reading to as many children as possible. To learn more about our initiative, please visit our website for further information.
