Celebrating Diversity: Mini Pianos Decorated with Art by Disabled Artists at Hamamatsu Station

Celebrating Diversity Through Art and Music

In a remarkable collaboration, Kawai Musical Instruments has joined the 'irodori project', a unique initiative aimed at highlighting the artistic talents of individuals with disabilities. Starting April 24, visitors to JR Hamamatsu Station's new Shinkansen concourse will have the opportunity to admire mini pianos featuring colorful artworks created by these talented artists.

The 'irodori project' embodies the spirit of inclusivity, seeking to provide platforms for disabled artists to express themselves and showcase their work. Teaming up with Top Co., which manages the project, and Shizuoka University of Art and Culture, Kawai Musical Instruments has taken a significant step in promoting these artists. Each of the five mini pianos on display is adorned with a distinct piece of art, each representing a different music genre. Visitors will not only enjoy the visual appeal but also the soothing melodies of original piano compositions played on these beautifully embellished instruments.

Among the highlights of this exhibition will be the projection of original visuals that complement the music, creating a multisensory experience for all attendees. This captivating display signifies a one-of-a-kind collaboration born out of partnerships between local businesses and educational institutions, showcasing a vibrant blend of creativity that can't be found elsewhere.

The irodori project extends its mission beyond the mini piano exhibition; it aims to regularly engage the general public with various art displays that include paintings and other forms of creative expression. By holding exhibitions in commercial spaces, the project aims to continuously provide opportunities for the wider community to familiarize themselves with the works of these remarkable artists, thereby enriching the cultural landscape of Hamamatsu.

Future Exhibition Schedule

The irodori project is not limited to the Hamamatsu Station exhibit. Below are the upcoming venues:
  • - From April 24 to late June 2026: JR Hamamatsu Station New Shinkansen Concourse Small Exhibition Hall, located at Suyama-cho, Hamamatsu City.
  • - From June 3 to June 7, 2026: Aeon Mall Hamamatsu Shidano, Symphony Court on the first floor, located at Tenno-cho, Hamamatsu City.

As Kawai Musical Instruments approaches its centennial milestone, the company is reflecting on its long-standing commitment to not only crafting pianos but also nurturing creativity through music, visual arts, and physical education. Their philosophy emphasizes that a piano should not be perceived as an intimidating or overly formal instrument; instead, it should be seen as a gateway for anyone seeking to express themselves. With just a tap on the keys, anyone can become a musician, a notion that aligns perfectly with the message embodied by the irodori project.

Through this exhibition, Kawai aims to demonstrate that art and music possess the power to transcend barriers and foster understanding among diverse communities. The mini pianos at Hamamatsu Station stand as a testament to this vision, showcasing the vibrant work of disabled artists and encouraging more inclusive expressions of art throughout society. Don't miss the chance to experience this beautiful celebration of diversity and creativity!
