Hyundai Hope on Wheels Celebrates 28 Years of Supporting Pediatric Cancer Research with $303 Million in Donations

Hyundai Hope on Wheels Shines at 28th Anniversary Gala

In an emotional gala held in Washington, D.C., Hyundai Hope on Wheels®, a prominent nonprofit organization established by Hyundai Motor America, celebrated a remarkable milestone—28 years and an impressive $303 million in contributions towards pediatric cancer research and care. This celebration brought together a mix of Hyundai executives, U.S. dealers, congressional members, and passionate advocates in a unified cause to support children battling cancer.

A Legacy of Giving

Launched in 1998, Hyundai Hope on Wheels has consistently demonstrated its commitment to fighting childhood cancer by providing grants and funding crucial research initiatives. Throughout its journey, the organization has made a significant impact, financially supporting over 1,600 research grants across more than 175 hospitals, making it one of the largest nonprofit funders of pediatric cancer research in the United States.

During the gala, attendees reflected on the heartbreaking reality of pediatric cancer while celebrating the organization's achievements. José Muñoz, the president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, expressed the purpose that drives the organization. “Hyundai Hope on Wheels embodies our mission of Progress for Humanity,” he stated, highlighting the relief the organization provides to families during their critical times.

Expanding Global Reach

The gala was not only about honoring the past but also about looking forward. Hyundai Hope on Wheels announced its ambitious plans to expand its mission globally, with launches planned in Europe, beginning with Sweden, followed by Spain and more countries to come. This marks a significant evolution in the organization’s mission to tackle pediatric cancer on a worldwide scale, aiming to replicate its successful model in different regions.

In addition to their expansion into Europe, the foundation is making strides in India through the Hyundai Cancer Genomics Center, which promises to benefit approximately 25,000 individuals by enhancing research capabilities and improving cancer treatment methodologies.

The O'Brien/Reilly Spirit of Hope Award

Another highlight of the evening was the inaugural O'Brien/Reilly Spirit of Hope Award, which was established to honor exceptional leadership among Hyundai dealers in the fight against pediatric cancer. Named after the co-founders, this award recognizes those who have gone above and beyond in their advocacy, community engagement, and fundraising efforts. A total of nine dealers were recognized, demonstrating the strong community support crucial to the success of Hyundai Hope on Wheels.

Among the awardees were standout dealers from various regions, illustrating the widespread dedication to this noble cause. The recipients reflected the rich diversity and commitment embodied by their communities in the quest for better treatments for childhood cancer.

Continuing the Fight

The gala also wrapped up a series of impactful events that included a Congressional Reception aimed at raising awareness and support for pediatric cancer research. It had prominent attendees, ranging from lawmakers to medical professionals committed to tackling this critical issue. Moreover, the event featured Hyundai Hope on Wheels' signature Handprint Ceremonies at renowned hospitals like Children's National Health System, whereby pediatric patients left colorful handprints on Hyundai vehicles as symbols of hope and resilience.

This year, as part of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Hyundai Hope on Wheels emphasized its unwavering commitment to fostering innovation in cancer research and improving access to treatments for affected families. Randy Parker, the president of Hyundai Motor North America, echoed this sentiment when he remarked, “The strength of Hyundai Hope on Wheels comes from the people behind it... Together, we have reached $303 million in lifetime giving, but we won't stop until every child facing cancer has access to better treatments and brighter outcomes.”

The Road Ahead

Looking ahead, Hyundai Hope on Wheels is poised to continue its impactful journey, embodying hope for countless families and children affected by the harsh realities of cancer. Through innovative fundraising initiatives, strong community partnerships, and dedicated research efforts, the organization aims to turn the tide against childhood cancer, ensuring that with each year, more lives can be touched, and more futures can be saved.
