XPRIZE Unveils Semifinalist Teams in Major Seawater Desalination Competition



XPRIZE, a pioneer in incentivizing innovative solutions to societal challenges, has announced the semifinalist teams progressing in their ambitious $119 million Water Scarcity competition. This initiative is backed by The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative and aims at transforming seawater desalination technology to combat the growing global water crisis. With 37 teams from 15 countries advancing, the competition marks a significant step toward establishing more sustainable, reliable, and affordable desalination systems.

Understanding the Water Scarcity Challenge



Global water scarcity is a pressing issue impacting nearly 80% of the world’s population. As reports indicate, by 2030, there may be a deficit of 40% in water supplies necessary for meeting global demand. Although the desalination sector has matured, it has not undergone significant innovation in years. The XPRIZE Water Scarcity initiative is harnessing the power of competition to reimagine desalination technologies, ensuring that clean water access is a reality for everyone.

Semifinalists and Their Innovations



During the recent judging process, 37 teams were evaluated on their technical merit, feasibility, and operational capabilities. The selected semifinalists have demonstrated promising advancements across two tracks:

Track A: System-Level Innovation


This category focuses on creating comprehensive desalination systems that lower energy consumption, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impacts. The teams are exploring novel deployment models, including modular, distributed systems and renewable-powered configurations. Early tests of these systems have shown the ability to produce approximately 1,000 liters of clean water daily over a two-week period, as they meet rigorous performance standards.

Track B: Novel Materials and Methods


In this track, teams are innovating with cutting-edge materials and separation techniques, intending to enhance desalination efficiency while lowering costs. They are working on advanced materials that not only improve water extraction but also extend the lifespan of desalination products while consuming less energy.

Anousheh Ansari, the CEO of XPRIZE, emphasized that the competition is about redefining access to safe water. She noted, "The progress represented by the semifinalist teams signifies a pivotal phase in shaping solutions that are scalable, energy-efficient, and cost-effective." Lauren Greenlee, Executive Vice President at XPRIZE, commented on the significant potential developments that could emerge from these teams, as they aim to tackle the long-standing challenges faced by the industry.

Testing for semifinalists will commence in 2026, with finalists to be announced in 2027. The ultimate winners will be those who successfully demonstrate breakthrough technologies, with cash prizes of up to $40 million available for the winning team in Track A, and $8 million for Track B’s innovative pioneers. This competition, a testament to XPRIZE's commitment to fostering innovation, presents an unprecedented opportunity to reshape how society accesses one of its most critical resources.
