Seaspan Boosts Fleet Efficiency with Modern Upgrades

Seaspan Corporation, a leader in maritime asset management, has announced significant advancements in its fleet through the implementation of comprehensive upgrades and modernizations aimed at enhancing efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Launched in 2013, Seaspan's SAVER program (Seaspan Action on Vessel Energy Reduction) has emphasized a dedicated approach to sustainability long before the industry faced stringent environmental regulations.

Guided by a strong ESG framework and a commitment to decarbonization, Seaspan has rolled out an ambitious fleet modernization initiative. This effort focuses on collaborating closely with clients to optimize ship performance while minimizing ecological footprints. Such upgrades not only extend the lifespan of the ships but also lead to reduced emissions and increased fuel flexibility for customers.

As of now, Seaspan has executed a remarkable 552 individual upgrades, with an additional 85 projects in various stages of planning and execution. The scope of these improvements covers a wide array of enhancements, focusing on electrical, thermodynamic, and hydrodynamic efficiencies, along with comprehensive vessel overhauls.

To date, the company has modernized 86 vessels and is actively working on 10 more, with future improvements planned, including a major overhaul to convert main engines to methanol, which is scheduled for delivery by mid-2026. The total investment in these initiatives has reached $226.5 million, underscoring Seaspan's comprehensive commitment to fleet enhancement.

The SAVER modernization program prioritizes three main categories of upgrades:
1. Fuel Saving and Efficiency Enhancements
- Renovation of rotors and cap fins
- Modification of bulbous bows
- Main engine power reduction
- Energy recovery systems

2. Cargo Capacity Optimization
- Elevation and extension of mooring bridges
- Increased stack weight capacity
- Improvement of mooring patterns
- Upgrades to Cargo Management System and container yards
- Expansion of refrigerated container capabilities

3. Green Fuel Integration and Emission Reductions

These comprehensive enhancements lead to lower fuel consumption, increased cargo capacity, and better operational flexibility, ensuring that Seaspan’s clients maintain competitiveness in a rapidly evolving market.

Bing Chen, President and CEO of Seaspan Corporation Pte. Ltd., emphasized the importance of fleet improvements as a core part of the company's decarbonization strategy. He stated, "By driving the modernization of our fleet alongside our clients, we not only enhance fleet operational performance but also deliver practical solutions to achieve sustainability in the maritime industry.
